I'm looking to upgrade the rear shocker on my 2001 speed triple, I've trawled the net and it seems that none of the usual suppliers (ie Ohlins, Penske, or WP) list a fitment for this particular model. Any ideas chaps?

I think you will find WP do make one, speak to Darren at:

Hi, thanx for that, I'll contact him, also noticed whilst searching through the links here that German company Wilbers list one for the 2001 s3, so thats another option
