Daytona 955i (02CE, 03)
25 Mar 2008 10:33 |
I have a 2002 CE Daytona that I am just uncomfortable on. I am 5'10 and weigh about 17-18 stone. Now I know the best thing to do is go on a diet. I got her out the garage at the weekend and the penny dropped. I struggled last year and I think its just that I am very uncomfortable on her. The whole riding position is just not working for me. While I fancy upgrading to a 1050 speed triple I dont think I have the cash at the moment. Current thoughts are pull off the fairing, top yoke, bars, lights etc. Then replace the top yoke with one from a speed triple or an aftermarket replacement, use speed tripple bars so the brake and clutch units click into the right location. Now the interesting bit - I want to use my old clocks so need to be able to mount the lights (preferably original or very close match) and the daytona clocks. Any suggestion for the clocks/lights mount? If I went for original S3 top yoke could I use the original S3 mount for the Daytona clocks (Its the Analogue Revcounter with digital speedo unit)? Want to keep the conversion as clean as possible and as close to original as my wallet will allow. Many Thanks. Mark To quote Garfield I am not overweight I am undertall

If the conversion is just a thought for more comfort then you may want to check out a set of 'Convertibars'....They are advertised in this months ride magazine...Looks like limitless possibilities in terms of adjustment and comfort....Go to Youtube and type in Covertibars in the search...It shows how to fit and useage.....Will work out much cheaper as they are £239...Just a thought....

Thanks
I have considered alterbnative bars such as LSL, Gilles, TBR et al. However for me this weekend I decided it really did not matter if I moved the bars up 2" and back 2" I need a total change. I ride an SV650 occasionally and it is so easy to move about on and so comfortable. The Tona I just feel so clumsy and we are not at one - I just dont "feel the force". I will be trying Yoga (as opposed to Yoda) and a serious diet but I think I can hear an S3 calling or is that a super duke, mmmmmm RC8 (Thwack - must control the urges). I dont have much in the way of readies (so thats the RC8 out of reach, quite literally) but I am not enjoying the riding experience of the Tona. She is so much fun but just the wrong shape for me So it is either convert to an S3 (guessing £500) or trade in for a 1050 (guessing I would need to have £3000 in my bank + Tona to do this) or something else (not sure about trading her for a 955i S3). Think I will need to clear out a few belongings to get some cash (or buy more lootery tickets) Many Thanks. Ells

I went from 595 to a 955 S3 then to an 06 Daytona....I ride all year and the S3 was a real ball acher in the winter with no weather protection and on fast rides it felt as if my head was being ripped off......

Well, I saw a speed triple top yoke on EBay but it turned out to be a drilled Daytona top yoke. Where do all the top yokes go? Not being funny but there are loads of bottom youkes and no tops. Seriously looking for the bits now. Still need to understand how to mount the lights, while using my Daytona clocks. Got a second test ride on a 1050 speed triple at the weekend. Hoping to get out on a super duke as well. So will be able to work out what I really want to do. Thanks. Mark.

Mark, Sprint Manufacturing (use Google, don’t know the url), do a replica light unit with a speedo mount for the 02 built in. I will probably have a genuine S3 top yolk and clamps for sale soon as long as my GSXR fork conversion goes OK (which it almost certainly will) . Same goes for the longer brake lines you'll need. PM me if you’re interested or want to know more about the Sprint light unit (I have one) I think Triump’ant do a top yolk too…

Kev, would be interested in the items. Cant see a way to PM you. My email address is mje_away@yahoo.co.uk. Is there any difference between your 2004 and my 2002CE with regards to forks. Thanks. Mark.

[edited]:
The top yoke is independent of the instrument & light mounts on an 02+ model - only the 97-01 Speed Triples have the analog gauges mount directly to the yoke. So you can use any yoke - OEM speed triple or after-market. The simplest way is to get the brackets & maybe even the light assembly from a 02 - 04 Speedy. It is a common bracket for the instruments & lights on that model. Check with Sandy at Triumphant or just keep an eye on EBay. Note that you may also need new clutch & throttle cable, possibly brake lines. Here is the schematic of the parts for the intrument/headlight mounting Inline Image

I have been watching Ebay for some time however most seem to come through with the top yoke missing ie tripple clamp assembly with the top yoke missing. I am trying to do this on a budget, and the top yoke seems to be the hardest component. I thinl I will start looking for the lights. If Kevm is selling his top yoke or I get lucky then I can start on the conversion. Many thanks for the help. Ells.
