I fancy a shiny cam cover for my T100 but favour polished alloy rather than the chrome job offered by Triumph. Has anyone here stripped the silver powder coat off their stock cover and polished it? Does the alloy under the paint take a polish or is it just sh*te metal?

I,m like you i want to get rid of the powder coat & polish, my plan was to go for it. the worst that can happen is that it looks crap & I have top paint it again.

Gents, check these websites as they may be of help to you. The flouropolymers are the best product I'm aware of but the Caswell spray can is obviously far easier to use, if there's a dealer in G.B.

Fen

I'm beginning to think along the same lines (ie give it a go and see what it looks like). After all, I don't think it could offend my eye more than the current flat powder coated cover.

Suppards, I have taken the plunge! took cover off last night, peeled away the powder coat from the corroded areas & set about a small area with some coarse wt & dry, result looks quite promising. I started to strip with Nitromores, the casting isn't perfectly smooth but can be finished with a bit of polishing.

should keep me busy for a while, I shall be doing engine covers too.

Cheers for that update. I've not had the nerve yet! Would be really interested to see a pic of the end result when you've finished the job.

Sandy

getting an old cover to work on was a route I had thought about, but then I couldn't find a used cover for what I thought was a reasonable price.

I'll pay a visit to your website. Dunno why I didn't think of that before!! Cheers!

Take a look, a lot less bother than plain polishing as it's a powdercoat. Also means that you don't need all the mess and elbow grease of keeping them tip top and shiny either.

The pictures show my Brother's car (used to be mine MANY moons ago) and his wheels were the guinea pig for a lot of the development work.

I've seen the latest rework and they are faultless. The pictures don't show it too well but they're bright chrome on the main face, a darker chrome on the flanks of each flame and the inner tub of the wheel is darker still to make keeping them clean and tidy less of a bother.

When this car was launched on the show circuit in 2005 it blew away the competition and the 1 off wheels played a large part in that. He's now working on his next car and Aerocoat are involved in some innovative work on that too.

Update: Got a nice cam cover from Sandy and an alloy polishing kit from CETEM.

I've stripped off the silver powdercoat (it took a couple of goes with Nitromors). Next weekend I will get to work with abrasives to smooth the casting ready for mirror polishing. I'll post pics when it's done.

Good to hear you'e having a go, mine is coming on quite nicely. I just don't seem to be able to find enough spare time. I have started to polish & even with just the course mop so far it is realy shinny, just a sod to get all of the casting dimples out.
Once I have this done I start on the engine covers.

The other day I was asked to list my hobbies. I included "cam cover polishing". This ain't gonna be a quick job. It maybe beats spanking the old monkey - but only just. Still makes your hand ache!!

Job's done! Here are some before and after pics of the finished item. It took about 30 hours labour in all and I think it looks much classier than the flat, grey, stock powdercoated item.

Looks nice, bloody hard work though especialy getting the surface smooth. I have had a slightly easier time with mine as I didn't want a highly polished finish. Once smoothed off I finished it with a fine scotch brite type pad, to leave a worn old bike look. I have doen the same to primary drive, altinator & sproket cover & it looks good.

Thanks Fen.

The casting underneath the powdercoat was a bit rough. I used various grades of abrasive flap wheel in an electric drill clamped in a vice. I stepped up the grits before getting on to wet and dry paper. Final cut was with 1000 grit w&d under the kitchen tap. Then I went on to brown supercut on a stitched mop followed by white finishing with an unstitched mop. Then a final buff with Belgom.

And cheers for sorting the pics out Blizz. Still not quite sussed how to do that!

Thought I would try to put a picture of bonnie onto here, it is finished (for now-untill funds recover). Apart from polishing back light & indicators have changed, flatter bars & tank pads. IMO it looks quite tasty.

Thanks for posting pics Fen. Very nice indeed - just set for a good summer! I've been toying with the idea of flatter bars. Where did you find yours?

Cheers. I had been looking at Jenks' "Vincent" bars but they seem a bit pricey at £65! Did you use any riser blocks or did you fit straight to the top yoke?

Straight onto standard bar clamps, comes in at about 2" lower than standard.
