Hi Folks,

My manual says 20 links should equal 321mm, but I guess this is from the START of the 1st plate to the END of the 20th plate. Can someone confirm this, and also, what's the max length before needing replaced?

Much thanks as usual,

Pivot pin centre to pin centre
Don't know what the max is for 20 links but check how much you can pull the chain away from the rear sprocket at mid-point (basically very back of sprocket)

Hi Jimmy,

Ok, I'm confused now ( not difficult, I know!) but pin to pin, it's not even close to reaching 321mm. Maybe 321 is the limit before replacement is required.

If I pull the chain at rear(centre) then it moves about 2-3mm. ie; you can JUST see the U between the teeth but doesn't show much of the sprocket's tooth.

Sorry I don't know if the 321 is a maximum...
What does it measure now?
The chain should be weighted on the bottom run (takes out the free play in the links) and measure on the top run Oh yes make sure it's in neutral!
From your description of the clearance on the sprocket it sounds fine to me..

Lifting the chain from the sprocket is more a check for wear on the sprocket than the chain.

Although if you replace on you need to replace the other anyway.

Not able to check the size at the mo... at work while there's blue skies! Meeting this afternoon! Damn!

I'll be changing the whole lot if I change the chain, but the shape of the sprocket teeth look fine.
She's just turned 15k so I thought I'd better check the (original) chain properly, rather than visually 'kicking' it.

Thinking of fitting a 520 & larger back if I do replace it.

I don't see why not. All the racers use them. I had one on my Duke ( road & track) and it was never a problem. Just go for a good quality one!

Centre of 1st pin to centre of 21st pin should not exceed 321 mm.

Mine did, just barely, so I replaced it.

[edited]: UPDATE:

Ok, so I measured the 21 link-pins at 318mm. So...

Can some kind soul who's got a NEW chain fitted, measure it so I can work out how stretched my chain actually is??? I need to know if I have to replace it before going on my hols I'm expecting to do about 4-5000miles.

Much thanks,

I just put a the new chain, sprocket and tires on mine and meant to measure it.

I think the bike is now too badly bent to do so

My suggestion is just leave it on for your holidays, keep it lubed and adjusted, and then replace it when you get back.

Man! Sorry to hear that, but glad you're on the mend. Hope you find a replacement bike soon.

All the best (if you're off work, don't let the daytime TV get to you! ),

I don't think I'll be looking for a bike for a while if ever.

Going to take the season off, anyway.

Got to see some TV shows that I haven't seen since I was a kid

Uploaded some pictures of the carnage to my photo album.

err, yeah,..I see your point! On saying that, I bet the bug will get you in the not too distant future. It normally comes when your sitting in your car in a queue, on a sunny afternoon, and a bike sails by!

Heal soon mate,

Yeah, I'll probably back.

For this season I have a 50cc Yamaha scooter that I bought for my son.

I only feel a little gay riding it.

Next season he'll probably get his license and want it back.
