Mines at 18,500 miles and seems to be at the end of its life, unless the cable has stretched Is this about right for a bike with this mileage - it's done a fair few track days but I only use the clutch for pulling away and for downshifts. How do I tell if it's a stretched cable or not other than visually inspecting the plates I've never kept a bike this long so have never worried about clutches ......it seems straight forward to replace for an averagely competent person......anyone done it and is it a straight forward as it looks? Ps - it's at the end of the adjustment on the clutch arm i.e there is no thread to the left of the bracket, towards the arm, only to the right (if that makes sense)

Is it slipping? If so try new springs - you can use the ones for a Daytona 1200, they're stiffer

Good...some proper replies. Triumph parts = just shy of £200 plus labour totalling £300 all in. This includes the steels (?) in essence a complete kit minus springs. That's a lot of dosh, particularly at the moment. I've never done a clutch before but I'm reasonably adept and have a Haynes manual So, I take it I should have the clutch out, measure the thickness of the plates and check tolerances as per manual then decide what and whether to replace. I'll also look to put stiffer spring in J-Zeus. Is the mileage about right? I get such conflicting info....one non-Triumph garage says it's right, a Triumph dealer said 30k miles. OE or good aftermarket.....any real difference?

I'll also look to put stiffer spring in J-Zeus.:
| Not unless you take me out to donner and a show first Luv..... Surely you don't need entire clutch ( unless summits broke ) --- get stiffer springs, EBC plates, and clutch cover gasket* - Haynes manual and away you gooooooooo!!!!!!! * I didn't even bother with this, if your careful taking the cover off you can reuse the existing gasket.

Cheers......a donner....you're cheap .....you can even have salad and extra chilli sauce One last question....EBC springs or go for the Daytona ones like you said.....any views? PS....at the moment it's all OK I think.....(contradictory as that sounds)....just slipping in the lower gears when it hits about 6k revs. I'll avoid riding it until I've had a good look so as not to cause any problems. I just reckon it's worn with no damage but only a strip down will tell: off to buy some verniers or whatever they're called to accurately measure the plates.

Thanks all. I'm off to Maplin to buy some digital verniers for a tenner so I can check properly. Stupid question......how do I tell if the springs are f**ked or, once I strip it down is it a case of " if the plates are within tolerance it must be the springs?

clutch plates are an easy fix ,evan a monkey can do it!!!!!! while its apart make sure the steel plates are not warped,a flat piece of glass works well.also dont forget to soak the new parts in oil overnite!!!!

The clutch springs are cheap, you might as well replace them regardless of what else you do

For those that are interested: Bought some cheap digital verniers from Maplin (£10)...piece of piss to use and read. Had plates out......all friction plates within spec and well within service limit. All "steels" show no sign of wear and are "true" Had a word with a friendly, knowledgeable Triumph mechanic and asked if it must therefore be springs......answer was, "maybe, but"......... "have you changed the oil recently?" "Yes" "what did you put in in"? "Can't remember......did it last year but only did about 100 miles on it then put the bike away. Done about another 150 and it's started to slip. Would have been branded fully synth, Mobil,Putoline, Motul of the right viscocity" "Have you still got the bottle?" "No" "Then there's a chance that you've put the wrong oil in it, one not for wet clutches and unless you can be absolutely, 100% sure, I reckon you've accidentally picked up the wrong oil. You won't be the first and won't be the last. F**king, shit, twat, bollocks, arse......I know not to use oil with additives....how did that one get by me So, it's a question of soak the plates in petrol overnight, drain the oil (I did this with the bike on the sidestand so I didn't have to drain it) and try again. But......It's probably worth putting new springs in anyhow like Peter says and I'm going to collect the gasket tomorrow so my friendly Triumph mechanic can have a quick look at the plates.

Springs . Would be silly not to. I think the chances of me putting the wrong oil in are small.

[edited]: Update
Oh.....what a palaver F**k all to do with the oil......remembered where I bought it and they only sell Motul and everything they stock is for wet clutches Karl at Windy Corner visually inspected the plates and says they're fine. Took the springs in and struck gold.......Daytona 1200 (thanks J.....good call ) springs a little longer, or perhaps the other ones had compressed, and seem a bit stiffer. 38p each compared to £2.50 each (approx) for the t5 springs. So.....all being well, that's it.

All done and road tested
Total cost about £10 which was mainly the gasket. Just be wary of the stock springs as they are questionable and go for the Daytona 1200 items. Also be wary of dealers diagnosing knackered clutches when they're slipping : including "steels".....£300 all in to you Sir.....bit different from a set of springs and a gasket.
