The owner's and workshop manuals for the Tiger 995i state the capacity of the cooling system is 2.8 litres. When doing a complete coolant change I could only get about 1.8 litres in. So i drained it all out again, disconnected the hoses, flushed every part of the system through, emptied it and started again. Again only 1.8 litres accepted. Ran the bike for a day and it behaved perfectly normally. No everheating, engine and radiator parts warming up as expected (hot out of the block, cooler out of the rad and back into the block, radiator gradually warming along its length, etc). Everything seemed OK. But the discrepancy worried me, so I've drained the system again - not just from the drainage plug but from the pipes at their lowest points (either side of the pump). And I've measured the liquid that came out - 1.8 litres. Are the manuals wrong and the capacity is really only 1.8, or have I got a litre of liquid that's defying gravity and refusing to drain out?? Went through a similar exercise just 2 weeks ago, buggered if I could get more than 1.8 litres in either after a complete drainout. Bike's been fine since. Anyone want a litre of Castrol antifreeze? Btw you haven't got the Triumph manual have you ? I'm still trying to track down whether the swingarm should have endfloat shims.

I even disconnected the radiator top and bottom and checked that there was no chance of any blockage trapping coolant in there. I'm fairly convinced the manuals are wrong. As for the swingarm, I'm not familiar with the term endfloat shims, but could the following manual references to "spacers" refer to them? "Remove the swinging arm. Collect the spacers that fit between the swinging arm and the frame." and "Align the swinging arm with the pivot spindle holes in the frame ensuring that the spacers remain in position and slide the pivot spindle through the swinging arm."

It seems that not all the coolant will come out of the radiator.

cheers Ray,regarding shims it seems you may have the same Haynes manual that's giving me grief. I talked myself into believing there's only 1.8l capacity 2 weeks ago, look on the bright side, it'll save a couple of quid the next time it's done.

The quotes in my posting above are from the official Triumph workshop manual. Re the radiator, Ken, I disconnected it top and bottom and poured a little clear water in the top - the same amount of clear water came out the bottom, so I don't think there was any coolant lurking in there. Cheers, Ray

Ahh, a Tiger. Don't ask me why I know you're hoses attach to the bottom. My 'tona hoses attach to the top and middle, so without removing the rad, my bike retains a little.

ptfe will be fine. It was originally developed during WW2 for containing highly corrosive stuff used in nuclear bomb development. and frying pans.

I know this is old post, but i had exactly the same issue on my 2004 RS, removed the rad cap, open the drain plug in the cylinder head and drained out all the water, removed the bottom hose from the rad and let the water out. Flushed through the rad with the graden hose until the water ran clear and flushed water through the engine by putting the hose into the disconnected end of the bottom hose and ran water through until it was clear running through the drain hole, bolted it all up and refilled, only got about 1.8 ltrs of coolant mix back in to the engine, did all the hose squezing, bike tilting and running things. So I measured the water that came out, it was only about 1.8 ltrs, so the rest must stay in the bottom of the engine somewhere !

Manual or owners handbook? If you adjust the chain to the Handbook its far to tight also it tells you to have the suspension unloaded with the swing arm supported on a paddock stand? HOW
