Tried to adjust my chain for first time today. have the Triumph c-spanner in my bike toolkit but no sign of the extenson handle thingy that's also supposed to be there. Had no joy getting the adjuster to budge so rather than buy an extension I thought I might try and find a c-spanner with a longer handle (OK, won't fit inthe toolkit, but once I've gotten it moving perhaps won't be such a bas%^&*d nex time). Any suggestions where I can get such an item?

OldNick,

Find a piece of steel flat bar about a foot long and weld it onto the C spanner. Works a treat.

I've seen them - do I need a partcular spec or are they of a standard curvature/radius?

There is a guy on ebay that makes these
http://www.bowl-of-mice.p.....Hubadjuster.JPG
I got this one for £12 plus postage.
He makes them specifcaly for triumphs, ducati's and a couple of others.
Bloody good quality it is too, better than the triumph tool.
Made out of 6mm stainless steel with an offset and reversable handle so you can use it comfortably from both sides and its a perfect fit on the hub adjuster.
I highly recommend it
I found it when putting 'triumph tools' into ebay search.

If he doesnt have an ad on ebay at the moment and you cant find him, Ill dig out the sellers name.

Mmmm - just make sure that the hub hasn't seized in the swinging arm?

Fixed with a "Pry bar", gently put into the clamp slot with copious amounts of "Plus Gas" around the hub!

Thought mine was too but it turned out it was seized in the caliper mounting plate the other side of the swing arm. Removed the Allen head that stops the plate spinning, copious quantities of WD40 and a gentle tap backwards and forwards with a sledge hammer soon freed it off. Just need to buy a large pair of circlip pliers so I can get the spindle out and clean it up properly to prevent it happening again.

I've tried the 'remove pinch bolt and insert from below' trick and squeezed copious quantities of penetrating oil in and left it a few days (having retightened the bolt so I can ride in between) - I'll have another look this wekend. I was thinking of removing the rear wheel anyways to service the rear brake so presumably easier to clean the hub with the wheel off? Timtrumpet - which bit did you 'tap' with the sledgehammer?

Its nowhere near as good as the one with the reversable handle I linked to above imho, and of course its no longer avialable.
You cant buy anything on that link..

Got one like Pump mentioned - great bit of kit and makes the OEM tool look like it's made of tin foil. If you want one, contact Paul directly at foggythomas@aol.com

which bit did you 'tap' with the sledgehammer?

The bracket (10mm thick plate) that the brake caliper is mounted on. There's an allen head screw that you need to remove first though which sits in a slot in the plate, accessed from the off(RH) side as you look at the bike from the rear which prevents the caliper assembly spinning with the wheel.

Spray with plenty of WD40 or similar before hand and I'd also recommend removing the caliper and securing it out of the way so the oil doesn't get on the pads.

Once loosened I could feel it was quite 'gritty' so just kept spraying WD40 on it as I spun it backwards and forwards

TimT - presumably this is all easier with the wheel removed?

Yes, you have to remove the back wheel to access the the slider plate but if it moves freely you dont need to remove the wheel to simply adjust the chain.
You want the weight of the bike on the wheel to adjust the chain to the correct slack.

This is the bit he hit with the hammer
http://www.bowl-of-mice.p.....Hub/Hub%207.jpg
Its the black sliding plate that the rear caliper hangs from.
You could possibly get at it to tap it back and forth if you are careful, but it sits almost dead centre of the wheel.

Ah, cheers Pump. Chain tension seems Ok at the moment (meets the 'can't quite push links behing swingarm' test) so I'm going to get some new rear pads & fluid and service the rear caliper and free up the chain adjuster all in one go (with a bit of luck & following wind)

Had back wheel off to fit new tyre and cleaned up rear caliper (yuck) and installed new pads whilst I was there. Thought I'd have a go at following TT's suggestion for freeing the hub adjuster whilst I was there - got a couple of questions:
I found the allen bolt that stops the caliper mounting plate from spinning - what do I have to remove to access this? I could get an allen key through a hole in the brake disc if I lined things up correctly but wasn't sure if there would be enough space between the mounting plate and the back of the brake disc for me to be able to remove the bolt, even if I managed to free it (which I couldn't)
Do I also need to undo the tabbed nut on the other side of the axle and remove more of the assembly (as Rich Halford mentions on his link http://www.richard-halford.co.uk/chain.html , or perhaps just remove the brake disc ?

Paragraph 4 of the article you've linked describes the method pretty well i.e. If you remove the hub nut, and withdraw the spindle the sprocket comes off as well, leaving clear access to the offending Allen head.

I couldn't get the internal circlip off (Circlip pliers were too small) so never got the whole assembly off and cleaned up as I'd wanted but I freed the adjuster and just kept squirting WD40 into the joint whilst spinning the plate
