Sprint ST (05->)

I was taking off from the dealer in the parking lot, low speed turn in a small lake of water from the rain that day, and dropped the Sprint. I almost recovered the bike, but it was a hell of a fight, and I lost. Very bizarre. Last time, I dropped a bike, was 25 years ago. I had been up all night at the fire house, tired maybe, who knows? Head scratcher. Another one, for the "experience" book of knowledge. The Sprint only has about 160 miles on it. I was warned about breaking the rear tire in a couple hundred miles by the dealer, before extreme handling? I guess, my little show would quailfy. I was padded up, full face, and suffered no "physical" injury. The Sprint, also faired well. The hardbags (panniers ?), left front turn signal, and the chrome on the body fairing vent, all acted as "crash bars", and saved me a lot of self imposed guilt. I guess, I should count myself lucky, in that regard. I would like to thank the "Triumph" good look and function design department also. The dealer and mechanics pulled the Sprint off of me. We picked the Sprint up, as brothers of the road would always do, we looked for the worse. I hopped on the Sprint and rode off, trying to shake off the bad luck funk. I took the bike home, using the Interstate and back roads for a "I hope there isn't something screwed up test". The Sprint is tough as nails, and I think it shifts even better! Just kidding. Telling my "betrothed", well that's another story.

I think the word "Fuck" sums up exactly how I would feel. I know I did when I dropped the Trophy after 1800 miles. Glad it's only superficial.

dropping bikes
the other day we were at a bike shop and watched a chap riding off on his VFR which had been in to have new tyres fitted. It was a coolish but dry day. He set off fairly carefully and was being sensible on his new tyres. He'd not got accross the road and wasn't even straightened up to ride away, he wasn't ginning the throttle, but the back spun up, and high-sided him, even through he wasn't doing much more than walking pace. Only thing I can think it might have been on the white line where he lost traction as he crossed the road. We helped pick him and the VFR up. It wasn't pretty - damaged Arai hat, scratched fairing, broken indicators...

Thanks. I am going to ride the Sprint to work tomorrow (firehouse). There only a minor scratches on the hardbag and a decorative piece of chrome (crashbar) on the fairing vent. I am a little stiff on the side I landed (yes the word fu!k was a thought, as well). As I was going down, I felt sorry for the Sprint, because I did not have crashbars. Oh well, Triumph gave me stock crashbars inadvertently, as a stock item. Thank you Hinckley. My wife thinks, I am a 52 year old fool, because I still like to ride them all (styles). I just traded a "05" Victory Hammer with a 250mm rear tire, weighed 700 pounds, 100 cubic inch (1634cc), six speed, etc. blah blah. Never a problem in 3 years. Before that a Harley Davidson XL1200 Roadster, Honda Sabre, Suzuki GS650E, and a host of Yamaha, Harley Davidson, and Honda dirt bikes. I take the blame and will be more careful. I am lucky. I started riding in 1970. Over that time, I would say, not quite a handful of spills. I lost a rear tire at 90 mph in the "80's", but it turned out to be a pleasant outcome, consisting of sitting on the road side, waiting for a ride. Thanks again for the thoughts and experiences. Riding still rules, please do it, safe as possible. I am in love with my Sprint. Alan Robert
