Just thought I'd pop on and say hello. I currently ride an SV650, or most of one anyway, it's mostly scrounged gixxer bits and aftermarket stuff... After something a little different, and I'm leaning heavily in the direction of a T595 or 955i. My Dad had a P reg 955i a while ago with underseat pipes on it, gorgeous bike untill some scum nicked it. P115 UGS it was, in yellow. Sounded like the end of the earth, been hooked since Anyway I'm looking at cheap ones, probably end up with a damage repairable around the 1500 mark. Cheers Chris

Hi Chris, Welcome to 595. FWIW, I'd go for an early T595, about a P plate, in fact. that was a well made ten-grand bike, which should have had all the niggles sorted, including a re-frame, probably. Whatever your choice, it'll be a goodun

Lol I would have been tempted by an S3 in green, if the price was right. You could have kept the extras though, I don't really want any anal intruder devices on a motysickle of mine! 2 serious contenders at the moment, there's an S plate t595 in red with a couple of scrapes and needs levers... 1500 Or there's an S3, needs bars, clocks, headlight, brake lever, that's an 02. 1800 quid. Need to get rid of my other SV650 first though...

Chris - always go for the later model if you can afford it. If you look, you'll find a myriad of threads on this and other sites regarding exploding 4th gears on some of the earlier T595s. Of course - if that particular issue has been dealt with by a previous owner....

The cost of a set of clocks for the S3 is going to be the git, I've got a feeling they're goign to be like hens teeth. The place I'm looking at can be a bit ambitious about price, there's no chance I'll pay the full list price!

Aye, and if anyone wants to buy a good condition sv650 for about 1500 quid then let me know Talking to a mechanic friend of mine he was saying the sprag clutches on the early engines are inside the cases, meaning they're a right fker to change if they give trouble. Did they change this and sort the 4th gear out on the 02 engines? (on the s3 I'm looking at) When did they change this, as this is 02 registered, but has the vents in the tailpod like the earlier ones. So it's possibly a late registered 01.

theres a VIN # and / or Engine number* denoting when the gbox was beefed up with the upgrade kit - not sure about the Sprags ....... you do still hear of problems with later bikes ........ *Try searching the threads for it, it gets quoted quite frequently ....

It's OK Andy, SP's being a muppet again, his bike has a 955cc engine, but it's in the danger zone because it's a T595. If one were to get a 955i it would have the modified 4th gear, as would later T595's (like mine)

Any idea what the insurance difference between daytona and S3 is? They are probably already preparing to administer a dry-bumming over the price. I'm drifting in the direction of the S3, BUT does anyone know how the speedo and clocks work, most importantly, are they integral to the ECU? It's a mechanical speedo and odometer on the 02 plate S3 I'm looking at, the clocks are knackered so I might just re-design the specification a little with some aftermarket ones.

I fink- tho I don't know - that whilst the speedo is mechanical, the tacho isn't and works off the ECU. However, this is me well out of my depth..... Sure you don't want a T300?

tempting, very tempting but it'd have to be very cheap. I far and away prefer the 955 engined bikes... As for the tacho, if it's a coil pickup like a "normal" one, then that's fine for use with aftermarket clocks, it's if it takes a digital signal from the ECU itself problems will arise.

Depends what classifies as cheap - a T3 which isn't a Mk1 Speed Triple could be picked up for less than a grand, if you're lucky - and it won't even need fixing up.... Engine has bags of character, torque, and smiles per mile. Also, as some say, there's a 'feel' to the engine - it really can have good and bad days! Engine is fairly bombproof, save for sprag clutches - early engines are easier to work on than later ones, but as long as you keep changing the oil andf keep the battery topped up, it should be an issue. Aside from sprags, there are few other recurring issues of serious note, at least that come to mind. Engine finish (and correct castings) is an issue on early ones like mine - one can forgive the flaking, especially after 15+ years, but the colour is nigh on impossible to match. There's pics of mine in my profile. Overall, I'd recommend them for a cheap entry into Triumph ownership. But then, I would say that, wouldn't I????

I would consider one as a spare bike, but the speed triple 955s and the TLS are the only bikes which have had a big "phwooooooar" factor for me. Serious case of shiny bike syndrome every S3 I see lol

I like the sound and the engine of the TLS, but for the fact that I'd have to spend 500 quid straight away to sort out that horrible rear damper. And I can't find a decent one for decent money. The S3 wins, now to find one...

He left the rotary damper on, cut the swingarm in half and welded it to half a VFR swingarm, mated to a Triumph wheel.

Well I've been to have a gander at a couple of bikes today. Option 1) 02 S3, needs bars, clocks, probably a radiator, the clutch cover is in a million bits, if it was an SV it would have stuffed bits into the engine, but appears to have like a 2-layered clutch cover? The big problem, the RHS footrest tabs on the frame have snapped off and I havent done TIG welding for about 3 years! 1800 option 2) t595, red, less than 4k miles! with a slightly bent fork leg 1500 I need to see in more detail the insurance costs before I decide because that's going to be the killer.

The insurance is indeed as painful as suspected, roughly 10% difference between the S3 and t595. Then again, I'm 19 so kind of expected to get shafted with a sideways pineapple trying to insure anything more interesting than a cabbage.

And so I rescind my title of "youngest on the forum"! Welcome Chris, tis indeed a madhouse, but usually a very helpful one. Ignore any comments about yellow bikes (or black ones) - they're all just jealous. On the T3 front, speed triples and daytonas both have the shiny bike appeal, but probably not the budget you're looking for. Whatever you go for, make sure it's had as much of the niggly engine stuff done as possible, and that you can insure it for less than the cost of the bike! Personally, I'd go for a 595, but then I'm a girl, and obviously that bears most of my judgement useless

Well, if it's still available when I've sold my spare SV then I'm gonna get the t595 and streetfighter it. depending on how I find the clip-ons.. I quite like the leverage of big renthals and low gearing. Is there a big difference in gearing on the S3 or is it just the different weight distribution that gives them their hooligan-ness? What are the fork swaps like? I've heard of gixxer thou being used? I very much doubt that it'll be any cheaper than replacing standard unless the stock wheel is fubar'd.

Too right, I hate going out in the rain, not because it might get dirty, but because it might get cleaner! At the moment it hasn't got a front sprocket cover on, because I fitted a chain and sprocket set the other week and can't really be arsed putting it back on. The fine mist of second hand diesel engine oil and chainsaw oil means I've got one waterproof boot lol. The rest of the bike is about the same, very well maintained, but completely caked in crap!

How does gearing affect overall bhp Andy? A difference in gearing will show acceleration at the expense of the bike revving out sooner, thus a lower top speed if it is capable of getting to the limiter in top. Still have the same power though, so does the S3 have softer cams? P.s ladies, this thread is worthless without pics!

Gaytona 02MY - RPM 10700; max torque at 8Kish S3 ditto - 9100 RPM; max torque at 5Kish.. to get those extra revs, con rods, sleeves, pistons and cam are muchos different.

Then I just need an exhaust, it's got the stock thing on it which sounds absolutely naff! (my SV has full stainless system + stubby can, it used to have packing in it about 10k miles back, plus a freeflowing filter)

Hi Chris and welcome young'un. Ask AB who took his Roulette Green SP03 in part ex..... in about 6 months time they'll be desperate to get shot of it at half price I reckon ... but then, they may have redone the wheels and sold it instead. Oh, and you don't want pictures of the ladies .... they'll give a lad like you nightmares ...

chris not being one to state the obvious but arent you still restricted to a 33 bhp bike till you 21, be a waste of the triple to have it resticted down, id have thought youd be better off with the sv.

Not exactly, you're not restricted untill you're 21, you're restricited untill you've had your license 2 years. I've a bit left to go on my restriction, and I do quite a bit of spannering, so I'm buying one that needs work so I can get it on the road for when the restrictions lifted. For the record, I do not agree that being 21 years old makes you capable of handling any bike, and am quite sure that I could kill myself just fine with 32bhp, the 33bhp law should be applied to everyone, or not at all!

i quite agree i took and passed my test at 30 and could have jummped staight on a blackbird if i so desired, as it was i went the bandit route and served me time till i upgraded to bigger bikes, and because im over 30 it only cost 200 quid fully comp for me daytona. not only that but i think cars should be restricted also, theres to many people getting injured or killed driving something that they cant handle. i do sypathise iwas young too not that long ago.

200 quid? I think they're adding in the date for me! Then again, it's not power that hurts, it's stupidity.

DOn't people just ignore the 33bhp rule anyway? My mate Barney never bothered, rode a "full power" 600 Bandit (sic) straight after his test. I've yet to see a copper with a mobile dyno in the back of his volvo.

Lots abide by it, lots don't. Few get caught, but it is quite a kicking if thy do catch you. Insurance can inspect it if there's question of them paying out for anything.

True, but I reckon I'd chance it, even if it's just because I'd begrudge paying £100 plus for four washers and a certificate.

Chris - the Hinckley arms is the proverbial Looney bin! The other more technical/mechanical forums may be more "enlightening" for actual bike issues.

I didn't specify inline fours (or to be pedantic, transverse parallel fours - an inline four is an Indian or K series BMW). RG500 Spondon would be nice. TRicked up to fuck V Max with 360 section rear maybe, TZ750 flat tracker perhaps. Fuckit, pass me a GSXR11 lump and a a Spondon frame kit. You know it makes sense.
