Fieldsheer USED to be a bloody excellent " courier" brand.in the Nineties, but my mate, Andy, who used to do ALL their repairs in Manchester, said they were later made in India and weren't up to snuff............. No idea if any of that is relevant today, just giving you a valuable history lesson............. My other mate, who's still a Bike courier, has my old Nineties Fieldsheer armoured Textile jacket, from the Nineties for his wife...............says it is still " the Dogs danglies!!!!" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to disagree chaps........
Most Fieldsheer stuff sold in the UK in the late '80's early '90's was utter shite. All the lairy colours were nothing more than a patchwork of panels all badly sewn together and just waiting to burst at the seams. There also seemed to be a lot of axilla in their suits and I don't mean a big green lizard from Japan Decent suits either use few panels or use a basic suit with colours overlayed. Things may have changed but I'd have to look closely at any Fieldsheer product to even consider it - the fact that they turned-out such shite would always be at the back of my mind. Maybe things have changed and they're better now in which case I stand corrected.

In the 80' 90's they were, at first, sewn together somewhere in Europe. Later, my mate, the leatherworker, got a lot in for repair, as they were sewing them together in India ( money, obviously)thats when they seemed to go down hill!!! I guess if you got a "pre India" one you were good to go!!!!!

RM. Partly true....... Lots of sewn together Panels aren't the GREATEST of ideas, as you rightly point out, BUT , if they are sewn together with the right size and material of thread per inch, they can still be relatively strong.............. My mate, above mentioned, used to get Hein Gericke Manchester's, Fieldsheer apparel to re stitch........once he'd finshed with them, they were far stronger than original!!! In fact , I had a jacket off him, which took at least three bad tumbles, and was still protective when I sold it!!!

Sorry I wouldn't know much about mass produced leathers as mine are bespoke old chap More panels = more opportunity for burst seams. There is a minimum and maximum number of stitches per inch.....too few and the pressure can burst the thread, too many and they act like perforations on a letter and just "tear along the dotted line". There's also the way they are stitched.........the seam should ideally be triple stitched, more in vulnerable areas. And of course, there's the quality of the hide used.....good suits will often use double thickness (or more) in key areas. I did have a Fieldsheer suit years ago.....infact it's still in the garage but I wouldn't wear it now as regrettably it fulfills all of the criteria in my first post.

I have the red and black one and it is excellent for those really hot days. While it contains a good selection of Armour I am not sure how good it would be in an accident. On the down side it makes you look like you ve just finished a game of Ice Hockey and jumped on your bike! Ells.
