Sprint won't start! Was fine about 10 days ago - now just spins & won't fire! Fresh fuel, new battery & still no joy! Still under warranty - but Youles still want £80 to collect in van! (6 mile round trip!) Anyone got a trailer/van & able to help?

Hi mate, did you get sorted? Just been perusing the wiring diagram and wondered If swapping out your ignition relay might be worth a try. Any of the four pin relays should be compatible for testing purposes. I have a couple of spares if you need. I take it when you switched on that the intruments lit up and the fuel pump primed?

Groucho - yes, all is fine - everything lights up & primes - engine turns over, but won't fire! Will give the relay idea a try when I get a chance!

Are you keeping the throttle closed when trying to start the engine ? The handbook recommends part pening the throttle to aid cold starting in very cold conditions. I would only try this once though or you risk flooding the engine.

Said I could pop over & pick it up - but will probably wait 'til he gets back. Things a bit fraught round here at the moment - Dad in hosplital, so have been away over the weekend. Will probably take a morning/afternoon off work & get Mal to come over for a couple of hours next week.

Hopefully should be OK - just getting old & forgot to look after himself! Much better now after fluids & some blood - got a previously scheduled op tomorrow, so they had to make sure he's fit & well beforehand. Wish him luck!

Spoke to him today - all well after the op & sounding like his old self again! Should be out next Tues, but still need to sort out a home help of some sort for him. He's 83 this year & getting very forgetful. Unfortunately I'm 100 miles away, so it's left up to my long suffering sister to watch out for him!

Update: Well, finally got the bike down to Youles - thanks to Mal & his trusty van. Quick chat with Jon the mechanic, followed by an upload of the latest tune & it fired up first time! Didn't even need to get it out of the van! Apparently he's seen it happen on a couple of other 1050s - if the battery gets too low, the ECU can reset & dump it's tune. All sorted under warranty.

Now it's just Mal's bike that won't start! Not that he's snapped the key off in the lock. again, not Mal, never!

Glad it's sorted with minimum fuss mate Although a low battery causing a reset and memory dump sounds suspect to me. Most Ecus store ignition and fuel mappings in non volatile programmable Roms that are unaffected by power disruption. Did he check for any stored fault codes?

Yeah, none showing - apparently the ECU doesn't exactly dump the tune, but can forget where it is in the induction cycle & just starts throwing sparks at random in the hope it'll catch - which it didn't. Jon told me that the 1050 doesn't use a crank sensor, instead it monitors the pressure in the intake manifolds to determine when to spark! Just glad it's sorted - probably why it's pissing down now.
