Speed Triple 955i (02-04)

13 Apr 2008 12:38
Hi, I've recently bought a Speed Triple and have just purchased a second hand Triumph race can for it. Can someone advise how much it should cost me to have the correct tune uploaded to the bike from a dealer.

I'm expecting the cost to vary from dealer to dealer depending on how well their weekend went and / or how busy they are at the moment. It would be useful to know what I should expect to pay so I can shop around if needs be (perhaps finding a good excuse to ride the bike a bit further afeild).

Depends how much business you give to a dealer. If you're a regular, its not unknown to do it for free. If you're an unknown, anywhere from 15mins-1hours labour at typically £50/hr.

So ~£20 would be a reasonable price to aim for !?!

I can't afford a TuneBoy at the moment, I might invest in one later but it's kind of hard to find a definitive answer to what kind of gains you can expect by using one. I understand that the Speed Triple is tuned for more low down grunt as opposed to outright top end power and I wouldn't want to loose the mid-range.

For anyone wanting to know I was charged a flat fee of £25 from my local dealer (Bridge - Exeter).

I am too cheap.....£25 to lift seat, plug in, download tune, cycle ignition, unplug, drop seat and drive out...what 5 mins? (yes I know they have to buy the tool but.....). I charge that to do a base dyno run.....

Captive market, the next nearest dealer to me wanted 45 minutes labour. I'd happlily support an indipendant tuning shop if one existed in my area, not neccesarily for a more competative price but for a more personal service and the ability to tap into some knowledgeable help and advice, a free coffee while you wait wouldn't have gone amiss given the price.

Tony it takes about 20 minutes to update the tune as the Triumph gameboy doesn't appear run at a very high speed.

No, they download the data in a very intensive manner - lots of checksums. You can emulate this with TB by selecting "slow download".

I do have a degree of sympathy for dealers as scanners and the like are not free, and they presumably have to keep in front of the game by buying the kit, and updates where applicable.
a pal of mine is an Independant HD dealer, and has the same problem with this "it only take 5 minutes" attitude, which is rich coming from a customer whose just bought a power commander for their new road king!
I'll pay twenty quid, not because money has no value, but because I'm comercialy realistic, these guys have overheads, and are in business to make a bob or two.

I, too was interested to see how much this'd cost at a dealer.

I'll be taking it to Lings in Ipswich (where I believe Fozz works/worked?), and I got not much help over the phone the other day when I tried to book an MOT (think it was a new guy on the phone - everyone's gotta learn sometime, right?).

I just got a hi level carbon can, and it ran pretty uneven before the can went on, and there's a horrible stutter right from the get-go if you crack the throttle too quickly - I was hoping that all this would get sorted fairly painlessly at a dealer - right or wrong?
