Daytona 955i (04->)

After my latest in a string of accidents in recent years a little (squeaky)voice inside is saying "get yourself a big shiney sedate sensible bike and drive it to places with other like minded Harley style leather clad bikers that have taken 2 hours to drive 10 miles (but enjoyed it) and chill out man."

To that end, I even started looking at the Speedmaster and America as I clicked between pages on the Triumph website.
It's kindof like the bike I imagined I'd buy when I was a young fellow who'd just seen Tom Cruise in Top Gun." However, I saw him later in Mission:Impossible 2 and ended up buying both the red Daytona and Speed Triple instead. If I'd just had a bit more cash earlier on...

So, what's the ride like on these Trumpy cruisers. cool or frumpy?

The only Triumph cruiser worth having is the R3 but I think you already knew that

Bonneville America (01->)

I have had my America for nearly six years and I am very happy with it now that I have had the engine bored out to 902cc complete with the carb upgrade as well as this has increased power by approximately 25-30% and torque bt nearly 40% which was much more important, now it will sit there all day at 85-90ph, though it still only goes to about 110-120mph due mainly having the aero dynamics of a brick as well as carrying my light 20stone. Though the main reason for buyng it was that I have a buggered knee that does not like to bend and I could not agree a deal on a HD that I am now glad about. There are plently of things that you can do to the bike to make it your own as I have written on my profile page.

Good luck in you choice.

I rode a Scrambler a while back and have to say the brakes take a lot of getting used to. You just can't go steaming around expecting to be able to stop abruptly 'cos you can't. Plus the engine is somewhat asthmatic.

Apart from that is was a great bike

The BMW X-country also has shite brakes. In fact only my GS has good brakes now everything else is just an imitation.

The X-country does wheelie pretty easily though

So, know one's gonna own up to having ridden the Speedmaster or is it "as written on the tin"?

The Speedmaster is an OK ride. The wife wanted me to buy a cruiser, so I test rode one. Pretty comfy, but lacks a bunch in the power department. It was, however, enjoyable to tool about on. I would have ended up with one if it weren't for a test ride that I took on a Rocket just a few months earlier. Hindsight being 20/20, I should have bought the Speedmaster and I would not have a 2300cc problem child. But that is another story.

Yes it is. Less then 3500mi and the clutch lets go every so often under a heavy load and the transmission is slowly turning itself in to a four speed.

Sorry about the hijack! It should be under warranty. The only issue is that I did my own first service. (never have trusted anyone else with my machines) I do have good rapport with the dealer and they said to ride it until it breaks, that way it can't be ignored.

So the Speedmaster is what it is. A bland showy ride that's not quite as impresive as its bigger brothers. Take life slowly man, don't get too excited about anything. Chill out, wear theatrical wild west gear and 'look cool', etc..

Just what Ill be looking for in a few years when I've 'given up' on life.

Till then I'll try and kill mysef on one of my other bikes again.

Have you thought about a Thruxton, same basic motor with a little extra on top and a sporty look. Also a ton of aftermarket if you want more of a good thing.
As for the gent with the R3, put a barnett clutch and spring kit into it and the clutch will not fail. The trannys on the rocket are a bitch to do, but the dealer in Omaha has a pretty quick turnaround and I know they have been into a couple before.

I've been on a speedmaster and bonneville america with the hopped up 902cc kit. Personally I love both bikes. I've put quite a few miles on the America and a rocket 3 and would take the America over the Rocket 3 anyday. Actually out of all the Triumphs I've been on (TBS, Legend TT, R3, S3, America, and Speedmaster) I prefer the Speedmaster/America second only to the S3.

Don't be fooled by the laid back look either, you can ride these bikes pretty hard and have a blast. They're relatively light wieght (compared to other cruisers) which makes them quick and handle well. To me riding an America was much like driving a 65 jaguar e-type, graceful. It does everything you want it to do. If you want to cruise you can cruise, if you want to blast through a corner you can do that too.

The only advice I have is to go with a Speedmaster due to the duel disk brakes up front. And put one of the big bore kits in it (I believe there are three available ranging up to 1500cc). oh yeah and louder pipes, the stock pipes kinda makes them sound like a golf cart.

Now that that's all said, go to your dealer and test ride one if you can. I'll be surprised if you don't come back grinning.

Good First Bike?

This thread is a little old I know. I love the look and feel of the Speedmaster. This bike will be my first, I know it is not the most powerful cruiser out there, that is part of the reason I chose it. Mostly I love the way it looks. All black is the color I would go with. This bike just seems to fit me, is there a reason I shouldn't go with this bike as my first?
