I agree, it`s good to see there are still people who stick the middle finger up to the `Health & Safety` culture....

I'm unclear whether he actually flies under his own power (so could take off and land) or whether it's more controlled freefall (like the bloke with the bat wings )

So, having now watched the video, it's a powered descent : no take off, no ascent - he just gets down faster. Bunch of arse.

Red thats wrong.
Hes been working on this for years and there are regular updates and discussions on dropzone.com.

Its true he cant take off under his own power and needs to be travelling at a minimum speed before firing the afterburners up and the only way currently to achieve this is to start the flight with a freefall.
Many of the earlier variations have been from a baloon basket.

Once he has gained enough speed from about 15 seconds freefall the afterburners fire and he is actually flying, its not a controlled descent.

During the flight he completed a number of loops and rolls I think the lowest roll being completed at about 6k feet and then climbed up to around 10k feet and performed more rolls before the fuel ran out and the jets cut.
He reached forward speeds of over 200mph.
After he ran out of fuel it became a freefall and he deployed his canopy at 4.5k.

From a testing point of view, a freefall is the best way to test it. If it really fucks up, hes got a good 50 seconds or so to jetison the wing and deploy a reserve canopy. And landing speeds are simply too fast with the wing powered and it doesnt provide enough lift for a glide landing.

For a comparison, from 12k feet which is standard jump height.

A freefaller has a 'flight' of around 55 seconds before opening a canopy at 4k, reaches a max forward speed in a track of about 80mph and has a slowest verticle speed of around 90mph with a slowpo suit on.
A practiced wingsuit(also known as a birdman suit) freefaller, can maintain a flight of around three and a half minutes, can reach forward speeds of around 150mph and has a slowest verticle speed of around 35 to 40mph for the very best wingsuit fliers.

But climbing at 200mph from 6k feet to 10k feet doing back rolls isnt falling, its powered flight, no?
