I have come across a bike with a Harris frame and a Triumph Speedtriple engine. The frame is a one off trellis type frame (Ducati 916). The frame number is a Harris frame number and the paperwork suggests it is a factory prototype. There is also a Motorcycle News article showing the bike and linking it to the Triumph factory about 1992-93. Can anyone help identify it?

OK Updated Info. Under the tank there were quick release fittings that have now been removed and the holes welded up. There are Nissin 4 pots on the bike with brand new 6 pots that have never been fitted. The fork yolks are adjustable with Suzuki GSXR upside downs. Ohlin rear shock. Harris tank and rear sets. No vin tag just a number in the headstock. The frame is not a stock Harris item and phone calls suggest there were only 3 of these made. 2 of which were destryed by the factory.

Not sure as yet its for sale but, the owner said it was some sort of factory prototype. I was wondering if it was genuine or some sort of BS. Seems the paperwork he showed me stacks up. What is the connection with Harris if any?

The frame came with no numbers at all. Harris at some point stamped a frame number into it and a certificate from Harris confirms this. The article from MCN says that Triumphs bosses were not best pleased that one of the prototypes had made it out "the back door". Present owner says he had a job getting it registered and road legal as there were objections from Triumph. " seperate police forces inspected the bike to make sure it wasnt stolen. It appears that the bike was sent out by mistake with competitor vehicles and should have been scrapped. Phone calls to Triumph seem to be met with its impossible, to it shoulnt have got out and also stoney silence. What the f*** is this bike? Harris deny all knowledge of its existence but have signed a certificate. Plot thickens! Some one please help?

it looks a bit like the T300 (?) racer that I have seen once (and raced against). Fuck off fast it was too cos it weighed next to nowt compared to the T595. Also the racer had a dummy tank that held the air box with a fuck off big ram air system that came in over the top of the top yolk.

Chunky Cherub, Whats a mule? Is that like a prototype? You got any more details on this T300 mule theory. Would it have had fuel injection on it at some time then? How is it related to the 509/595? It looks similar in the MCN article.

Chris. a mule is a test bed for bits and pieces and is not intended to become a production model. A prototype is a bike intended for production,, but it doesn't mean it will make it into production

Blizzard, thanx for that info. The guy who owns the bike says there was a lot of controversy at the time with this bike. Seems he might be telling the truth then as regards "factory prototypes", mules and the like. The bike is very heavy and the frame is a very well made but heavy steel item.

Dump the fairing, get the chassis nickel plated, add a Street fighter top yoke, high level or a stubby can and you'd have a helluva bike.....

Yes, theres a folder full of info with the bike, stacks of pictures during its build. Seems it started as a rolling chassis all it needed was an engine and a seat

yes, thats what MCN say. I have spoken to Harris and at first they denied its existence. Then the owner emailed pictures of the bike and the certificate and also reminded them of his visit to the old factory when he had the pipes made. It caused them to flap when the bike showed up on the trailer, but they made the exhaust for it and stamped a number into the frame. A frame builder at Harris recollects building 3 frames from Triumph drawings, which confirms the Triumph scource saying 3 bikes were built for "evaluation and 2 were destroyed the 3rd was dismantled.

Harris frame kits are £3,000 plus, Speed Triples they made lots of and the value is still going down (pity as they are a decent bike) and this is the only one. Check out the Quadrant at the bike museum. Insurance value after the fire £250,000. So, No not really, just a good deal I think.

The actual final product was far, far more visually appealling. Confirms to me the Big T did a great job hence the success of the S3!

No I mean the prototype bike this thread is all about. Its got a page in MCN today on page 15 with the history of the bike and some of its back ground about how it came to be registered with its first owner. Title of the article is "Triumphs forgotten Daytona prototype back on the road." Cant really get them mixed up... Id scan it if I had a scanner.

Hi Junk Maile, I have just seen this post and recall some information that may be relevant/of interest? I saw a Triumph T595 prototype frame being sold on Ebay, about 3-4 years ago. It was Ducati'ish, but you could see how the production frame would have evolved with spars replaced the trellis work. It may be that the present owner bought this frame off of Ebay? There was some documentation and history mentioned in the Ebay sale, confirming it was a true factory prototype. Best regards Geoff

Hi Geoff, The previous owner was the first registered owner of the bike and he told me it was advertised on ebay about 2=3 years ago. Apparently there was no interest in the bike and it never was sold. Seems that possibly no one believed it could be a factory prototype as it would be difficult to prove its pedigree. I must admit that when I saw it I had no doubt there was something different about it. I have carried out my own extensive investigations and its 100% the genuine article. I have spoken to Harris and they said they had knowlegde of its existence but wouldnt comment further. Triumph, were just being Triumph when I called them. Bit of a shame really as its part of their history and heritage too.

S'ok folks its going back to black. Not going to streetfighter it, customise it, just keep it as it is, but cleaner. Thanx for being helpful one and all.

Rob I agree, I have the Norton Ron Haslam rode at the British GP back in the early 90's and people have said to me that I should use it for track days Imagine dropping it and trying to replace the numerous one off parts.

Spondonrat: I have the Norton Ron Haslam rode at the British GP back in the early 90's | You own this bike? The famous JPS 588cc twin rotary (that was actually closer to 1176cc or 1764cc depending on how you worked it out, which was why it was so fast on the straights) that he rode in the british GP when he raced for Norton from 91? Photo Album Image Photo Album Image This bike was absolutly unique among the Norton rotary JPS bikes because it had a one off aluminium custom frame made by Harris performance specificly for Ron. I think if I recall correctly the engine was different too because unlike the other nortons it ran backwards and had a belt drive. And you got your hands on this one off piece of history? Wow How much did you pay for it? It must be worth enough to retire on? I used to dribble over this bike at the time. It was the Nortons that spiked my interest in gp races. Pictures please ?

Yes I do indeed own that bike, the one in the top photo not the bottom one. The bottom one is a Spondon framed RCW588 as opposed to the Harris framed NRS588. It's not entirely true that it had a one off frame, the team ran I think 3 bikes but mine is number 001 which was the one Ron rode at the GP. The frame is a totally fabricated alloy frame as opposed to the Spondon that uses extruded beams. The engine does run backwards but that was the same as the road going F1 engine. It does use a belt drive and a slipper clutch. I actually bought it as a complete kit of parts from a few different sources and I am in the long slow process of restoring it to it's former glory. I didn't pay what it was worth but it's irrelevant as I wont ever sell it. Bugger I just gave away my alter ego

Believe me I have neither the time nor the resources to restore it but it will be done, properly. I've added a couple of teasers just to show I'm not full of it. I made a promise to the person I bought the chassis from not to sell it and I wont. Inline Image Inline Image

Wow, what a project bike to have in the garage. Beats the old shitters that most of have spread in bits Serious question. When its restored, will it be road legal or kept in its original race trim, so effectivly a show bike. Assuming you still wouldnt use it as a track bike

Thanks. Well to be honest it wouldn't be possible to road register it over here especially. I suppose theoretically it could be modified enough to get through the process but it would be a shame to do it really. It will be a running show bike, a tribute if you like to what Norton achieved with very limited resources.

Gene, welcome to what seems like an exclusive club, I am sure you will make a mighty fine bike out of that. I have always loved Brit bikes even tho I know the Japs, Germans and Italians make some great stuff too! But there is something special about a Brit Bike and when you pull up on one you know its going to attract attention. As for Nortons? I love em.

I have an open ended question here for anyone who may know. The ignition coils have been removed from the bike and the wiring diagram (Works manual) shows there is a common red between the three coils. Question is the common red goes on + Positive OR the - Negative side of the ignition coils????? Thanx in advance

Amazingly I almost bought all the white bodywork from that TT bike but at the last minute the bloke at Norton (who shall remain nameless) decided maybe he shouldn't which was just as well because the bike ended up in the NMM.

Triumph Up-date. The bike is cleaning up nicely, its nearly back together another week possibly two and it'l be running again, the bike wont be custonised or anyway radicalised as there seems no point in altering what is a unique bike. I will be posting pictures of it on here when its finished. Those that gave me a few tips and you know who you are. Many thanx and I really appreciate your input. Catch you all soon,
