Hiya,

Picked up an 02 TT600 on Saturday. First bike. Fallen in love already!

It's been really well looked after, full service history, loads of receipts, etc.

It had an oil change a month ago and it looks to me like it's been overfilled... REALLY OVERFILLED. It's about 2cm from the top of the dipstick.

Wehn you fire it up it's leaking oil. I don't know exactly where from as I've not taken the fairings off yet. I really am a newbie to biking. I've not even passed my test yet.

Is this likely to have done any damage?

What should I do?

Please help!

Cheers

Syphon extra oil out from the filler opening so the level is OK.

Also make sure there is no water in the oil. If a head gasket or similar is leaking, then the extra fluid in oil might be coolant.

Running with a major overfill might have popped a seal somewhere, too, but you should know after getting oil level down. Where is the current visible oil leak at?

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm really gonna sound like a novice here but then let's be honest, I know nothing!

I've not taken the fairing off but you can feel the oil if you put your hand through the vent on the left just above the TT logo. As it heats up the smoke comes out of this vent and up to the left of the clocks.

None of the oil warning lights have come on either.

All the oil is looking nice and clean.

Draining 'some' oil via the drain plug is possible, tho tends to be messy.

Make sure the container is big enough to hold all the contents of the sump, just in case you can't get the plug back in again.

Not yet.

Get the oil down to the correct level, then run it.
Might be as simple as that.

(assume it wasn't a dealer you bought it off ?)

No, bought it privately.

Emptied my savings and bank account and I'm living of cup-a-soups for the next 2 weeks to finance it!

I'll drain some of the oil and run it without the fairing ASAP. See if it's still leaking.

Sy, I would say not (yet) - Did you syringe oil out or drop some out the drain plug. If it was out the drain plug did the oil look OK? Is this still happening with the level corrected? You said the oil looked clean, does the coolant look fine, as in no white gunge! On side stand was the level nearer the right mark as in in some "dipstick" topped it up with a not level bike? Don't know the TT but I guess there is a crank breather with a plastic poppet valve in line through to airbox? Open it up and see if you have oil up there.

I'll check when I get home from work today. It's not even been riden more than 15 miles since the oil change so fingers crossed it's not f**ked!

Cheers for your help peeps. I'll let you know what I find when I'm back with the bike.

If you have any other thoughts then please let me know.

Thanks

Hi Sy,

an overfilled sump will most of the time blow the mains seals don't ride it until you have : drained all the oil and renewed it or had someone with mechanical knowledge do it.

once you drop the oil level, it will still be burning of the residul oil caused by the leak, could be difficult to track the leak , Drop the fairings, correct the oil level, get some D15 (truck wash) not sure whats available for you guys, wash it down, much easier to see where if any leaks are present.
An get ya damn licence.!!!

Finding 'leaks' is occasionally a bitch to do - my advice would be - unless it's VERY obvious...

Fluids can 'travel' from where they initially leak from - spray the lump with 'gunk' engine cleaner then jetwash it (carefully of course - make sure not to hit anything sensitive or with any bearings in it dead on with the jetwasher) - better still steam clean it if u can

Then once you've sorted out [and it's bone dry again] the oil level fire it up VERY BRIEFLY then kill it - have a look - then repeat that a few times, possibly letting it run a little longer each time (preferably outdoors in bright daylight) then you should be able to spot it

(Given I dont know how that model is hooked up, I would also automatically check the airbox for oil as well btw)

Hi Ash,

Thanks for the post. I'm not gonna be back with my bike to check anything for at least 6 hours and I'm so worried that it's busted!

Is oil in the airbox very bad?

Right, small update. Had literally 5 mins back with the bike between work and evening commitments. It wasn't as full as I remembered. It's about 2cm above the max line, not 2 cm from the top. When it's on the sidestand then the it doesn't regester on the dipstick. I couldn't see where the air filter was straight away so couldn't check that for oil. If anyone can help by telling me where to look then I'll check as soon as I get in. No puddles of oil underneath either which is a good thing!

Have you got a manual or owners hand book?

It will tell you how to use the dipstick

Hey baron. I'm all good with the dipstick. It's the idiot who did the oil change who really deserves a slap!

It was suggested that they may have filled the oil up on the sidestand as a reason for the excess oil.

Airbox will be under the tank.
Not seen the 600, but, if you're up for it, likely involves removal of the seat, then the tank, which will be fastened front and rear. Disconnect fuel lines, breathers, any electrical connectors - label everything as you go.

2cm too much oil, is still too much.
Not sure about the 600, but the triples are very sensitive to overfilling.

The dipstick comment was for real Sy - EG on the 1050 SP3 you have to check the oil with the bike dead upright and the dipstick screwed FULLY in - others I believe require measurement by NOT screwing it in but placing in the mouth of the thread (like my old CX was as another example) - makes a considerable difference in terms of the volume of oil in the sump

Best to find out what it is for the TT6

Hey peeps, thought I'd wade straight in and take off the fairing when I got back yesterday evening. I now know that I should't wade straight in and take off the fairing when I get back of an evening.

I strted undoing all the allen key bolts that seemed to hold that panel on. I realised that it clearly couldn't pass the indicator so undid the allen bolt next to that too. After a while I realised that the fairing wasn't coming off with my extremely limited, no hang on, complete lack of knowledge and started doing the bolts back up. I now have a floppy indicator. I can't get the bolt to engage at all. Does anybody have any idea how to do this. I need a tutor!

I'm very embarassed!

'fraid there's not many TT600 owners on here.

Might be stating the obvious, the bolt must engage with something on the inside of the fairing.
A bracket or maybe just a nut/washer.

Have a look at the one on the other side, see how that's held together.

pay your £9.55 premier membership and then you can access the knowledge base on here properly which contains a TT600 service manual

look under the bike - is there a belly pan - if so then remove it - if there isn't then there will be extra bolts to fix the fairing to the frame - never taken off a tt600 fairing though

there should be connectors for the indicator wiring - just disconnect them and leave the indicator in place on the fairing

Fuck it - gaffer tape it back on

Well - ok actually, you MIGHT find that - if there are no visible/accesible connectors to disconnect the indicators - try dismantling the indicator itself - as in take off the lens etc until you can see the internal wiring and ascertain if there are small bullet connectors INSIDE - in which case disconnect those (may need 2 sets of long nose pliers to do it) and you can leave the indicator in situ. on the panel. Just a thought - some of the 1050 SP3 riders have discovered that this is the best way to remove the front indicators to change either the indicators themselves or the rad covers.........as for me, I'm not that smart, I just cut the fuckers with wire cutters and re-soldered new bullet connectors after

As for getting the fairing off? Not a clue, sorry - never seen one up close in that regard (c'mon....'how hard can it be??'..........I've lost count of the amount of times I wish I hadn't said that)

Reminds me of the time 15 years ago when my father, who was 73 at the time, took my GPZ1000RX for a spin (He'd had a go on most of the bikes I'd had up to then). He came back after half an hour and said it was too fast. What do mean says I, "well I got it up to 160 on the clock and it was still accelerating a bit"

Needless to say he's never ridden any of my bikes since.

Welcome to the wonderful world of motorcycles Simon....an excellent first bike may I say. You`ve already found some of the downsides of biking and Congrats on passing your test....now you can start to learn to ride (as out in the real world) Just take it easy for a while and use this summer as a learning curve, and remember that there`s a lot of blind drivers out there.
Oh and take a shufti into the `Hinkley Arms` that`s where most of us sad old fuckers end up....It`s basically a `virtual` Retirement home` except for me of course...I`m there to inject a bit of life into the sad old Zimmered old Gimmers....
