On the way home from work the other night on the 'Tona, I had to pull up at a set of lights. I'd been filtering and so was between 2 cars. The car on my r/h side was a newish, dark coloured MX5 with the top down. I looked down into the leather upolstered interior to see a shapely pair of tanned legs. My eyes followed the leg up the body, to see a very attractive blond girl sitting in the drivers seat. As I was enjoying view, she reached for her hand held mobile phone. I said "excuse me, but you know you're commiting a motoring offence by using your phone don't you? "Sod off!" came back the reply. O.K, I though, so I waited utill she was talking into the phone and tweeked the loud lever...... Revenge, almost as sweet as the view......

If I'm overtaking someone and see them on the phone I usually pull in front and slow down to about half the speed limit until they put it down. Even managed to set off a marital tiff (women driving on phone, bloke starts to have a go to put phone down - he must have been late for something!)

Good on you Homer! I put £10 on my "Mobile" last year - I had to renew it last week - bloody expensive idea in my book! My phone is for ME - I recieve phone calls from people who need to talk to me, I don't send texts etc.......... It's switched OFF more than it's ON!

Pulled up next to a girl talking on her mobile yesterday morning whilst sitting at lights, I didn't say or do anything other than stare at her, she looked at me, went all sheepish, switched it off and put it down sharpish. Made me smile They know it's wrong yet they still do it

I'm from London, so that ain't me not nor nyvah. I've go one of those expensive mobile things as well. I put a tenner on in December, still got £6.50 left. I get a few twats park in the cycle/bus lane to answer their phones. They soon put it down when their mirrors fall off.

Why is it more often the drivers of the most expensive cars that use their phone whilst driving? When you've spent 80k on your new Merc what difference is a few extra quid to stop you playing pinball with kids playing near the road!! I fnuckin hate them all... it infuriates me to see people risking the lives of themselves and those around them just to tell the wife to put the tea on... And HGV drivers.... don't get me started!! 40 tonnes of steel driven by an overweight cnut with a mobile in one hand and a pie in the other!! Do these guys ever drive under the 30mph speed limit!! (Christ, I sound like my dad!!)

Ha! Yesterday morning a girl in our office got pulled by a police car just outside our office as she arrived for work. She is notorious for having a mobile glued to her ear. On the spot fine - 3 points and £60.

I go past them and make the fuckers drive real slow until they put it down. Only the other night in Oakham ... a guy in a Transit on the phone at the roundabout in the middle of town .... I come across the island very slowly lookng directly at him and my hand on the horn ... he puts the phone down and follows me, getting right up behind the car ... so I slow down almost to a crawl. He eventually got the message and pulled back to a more respectable distance.

What phone. I'm deaf so don't have one (well I do, for texting, when I can find the blessed thing). I had fun watching some police officers on bikes tapping on windows as they pulled alongside drivers yakking away. Hot potato being dropping springs to mind...! One got a particularly good bollocking as she damn near had him off his bike by changing lanes without indicating or looking!

I subscribe to the Jeremy Clarkson perspective on all this. I think they should repeal the law, but include a bit in the driving test where you have to steer through some cones while holding a conversation on a mobile in one hand, hold a full, open coke can in the other, and steer with your knees. Those that can't do it don't get a licence. I don't use a hand held in the car any more, as I don't want the fine & points, but I am more than capable of driving one handed and holding a conversation at the same time. I speak with passengers in the car and often only have one hand on the wheel. It's all far less brain power than carving through a set of bends on a bike which, assuming you're over the speed limit, is also illegal and potentially dangerous to others. It's not mobile phones that are the problem it's the useless bloody drivers who can't drive worth a damn anyway being further distracted by trying to do something else. It's the same whether they're using a phone, lighting a cigarette, changing the CD or eating. I lived in South Africa for 6 years after the advent of the mobile, and used it in the car all the time. Never had a close encounter once... well not while on the phone anyway. Used it here too until the law changed. My pet hate is not phone users, it's those self righteous twats in their cars who won't go over 40 on the open road, block the outside lane at a traffic light and then react so slowly that the tractor in the inside lane gets away first (happened to me this morning!) and insist on doing exactly 25 mph in 30 limits. I could drive better with the mobile and the coke can...

I was one of those who used to do 54,000 miles per annum, sandwich/crisps/KFC Zinger (go large), drink, phone - all at the same time ... got quite adept at the old balancing act. I also realise now that it was quite a prattish thing to do. Whatever you think, attention is diverted. For those who are driving anything half decent there is no excuse for not having a decent car kit fitted ... you'd be amazed at how many cars we deliver without hand held kits ever to be installed even now, and to drivers who are doing 20k+ business miles pa. As Berlin said FIAT fit it to a lot of their vehicles (it's called 'Blue and Me') - even my wifes new FIAT 500 will have it. SAT NAV's are the new enemy ....

Studies have shown that it's not the talking that's the problem it that your brain works differently when your one the phone as you are trying to picture who you are talking to. Apparently the only people who can phone and drive are airline pilots. I would guess it's that they are used to talking to someone who isn't there

Nothing wrong with Sat Navs. It`s the twats who dont know how to use them properly. I`m a safer driver since I`ve got one. No more glancing down at a map on the passenger seat at 70 mph, no more changing lanes at the last minute `cos I dont know where I`m going. I can make all my manoevres well in time without causing other road users grief. You dont need to glane at the screen any more than you do your rev counter or speedo and coupled with the aural instructions....jobs a good `un. Trouble is that a lot of bells out there dont know how to use one properly

Well said "Strumpet" I was thinking how to post the same without seeming to promote mobiles when driving. Mobiles are a symptom, the cause is shit driving, and shit awareness of whats around you. As has been stated, mobiles will be substituted with a new "Symptom", namely Sat Nav's soon Unfortunately, we are "gifted" in the sense that we have to be aware of EVERYTHING around us 100% of the time. People who had never ridden cannot comprehend the amount of information they are missing and think we are being "over reactive". (Well they are when I make them pull up at the side of the road and explain themselves )

If the studies Bilzzard is referring to are the ones I saw featured on a TV program (and the reference to airline pilots makes me think they are) they consisted of putting people in a driving simulator and asking them increasingly difficult mental arithmetic problems. As the problems got harder their driving got worse. As stated, airline pilots, who do that sort of thing for a living and are also used to simulators, were quite good at it. The only thing it 'proved' is that you shouldn't go driving with maths teachers.
