Speed Triple 955i (99-01)
25 Feb 2008 23:21 |
Well finally made a start on my track bike. A 04 Daytona with the silhouette of a 1050 sp3. First problem was my nice race seat unit would not fit on the subframe which is too long, too wide and with the struts too far back. Sooooo call on a mate get out the angle-grinder and propane torch and start cutting and bending (see pics in photo album). Next job is strip the paint off make some gusseting out of ally sheet and take it to the welder. I'll keep you posted

Want to see "Homemade?" Check my mates pair of Kawasaki's - one is a "Piper" ex Endurance bike http://www.t595.net/album.....2&img=47070 And, this one started life as a "Rickman?" http://www.t595.net/album.....1&img=39997 He has another "On build" at present based on a Canadian KZ frame, though not a lot is left, as he has already fitted a monoshock (Same as the Rickman) - all the fairings are homemade, starting with cardboard and Isopon - then a mould, finishing with lay up using carbon fibre (I work in Aerospace Composites) - the fuel tanks are either made by him or modified!! Then again, he is a "Contract Welder" by trade, and is used to "Making!" So best of luck with your "Project" - I know only too well how much work is involved - gives you an insight into what the factories go through, only to be fucked up by the "Beancounters!"

Conversion stalled Deacs. Dropped the frame off at the powdercoaters around the time of my last post. Seemed a bit of a backstreet bodger but his work looked OK and he showed me a sample of the most amazing two coat powder. Then I settled back to wait.............and wait. After yet another missed deadline I called to check on progress. "still waiting for the powder" he says (again), "eerr it has been six weeks Tim" I tentativerly suggest. "COME AND TAKE THE FUCKING THING AWAY THEN" he screamed. Oh dear! Frame and swingarm now with Trestans, another powder-coater recomended by a freind, but the powder I want is made by Dupont and Trestans dont have an account with them. After initially promising to supply the powder on a cash account basis Dupont now seem to be making things difficult, insisting on a full credit check on Trestans for what is effectivly a cash sale!!! Oh well. My long suffering speed triple has had to be pressed into trackday service for this year and has been treated to a full suspension overhaul in reward. I'll keep you posted on Project Daytona.

Update on my mates "Project" - just sent a "Wish List" to APE in the States - total cost?? (Unknown) but could be about $3K(US) - approximately £1500, for engine parts...............and this one sports a "Works" 8 plug head!! Another mate seems to be smelling of roses as well, as "Classic Bike" has a report on a "Norton TX750 Thruxton Club Racer" at the last count there are only 3 complete machines left, one built from parts! However, he has one...........frame #02!! (Could be 4 machines left) Estimated price of the one in "CB" - £30K, he paid nowhere near that, and his is nearly complete - needs exhausts and carbs!!
