Help! I bought this fancy wideband O2 sensor/data logger setup but I can't find a suitable place to pick up rpm from. Tapping the coil trigger didn't work, and the crank pos. sensor's no good as there are 20-something pulses generated from one crank rev., and I don't see anyway in the software to scale that. Anyone know of anything else that can be used? The rpm input can't be driven over 5vdc or the instrument may be damaged.

try tapping the coil at the ecu rather tahn the coil. Has it got an inductive pickup?

X-Man is right. Tach signal from the ECU is the way to go. I tried fighting with the coil signal for a couple of days to avoid having to hack into the ECU harness but finally gave up and did so. It worked great.

Thanks, guys. I thought of taking the tach signal but the schematic in the manual doesn't call out the specific wire for the tach signal; it just show a glob of conductors plugged into the intrument panel. Do you know which one it is? Just to make sure I'm clear; did you pick up the tach output or the coil trigger? The bike is an '06 Daytona 955. Thanks for the replies! Rick

What is it you are trying to connect?

On my RS is was a red wire connected to ECU connector 2/A1. Yours is almost certainly going to be the same. FYI, the back of the ECU connectors have a grid layout, that is what the A1 refers to. I don't recall which connector is #1 and which is #2. Comparing the schematic with the bike enabled me to figure it out.

X-man, I'm hooking up an Innovate Motorsports LM-1 wideband O2 sensor/data logger with the optional LM-2 input cable. The O2 sensor connects directly to the LM-1 and the TPS, RPM, etc. connect to the LM-2. Thanks, SprintRS Guy, I'll look at that when I get home.

Ah hah. It was a LM1 that had me frustrated in the garage for hours. Innovate has a forum and if you search you will find numerous discussons on using a resistive voltage divider to work with the coil signal. I tried it and it didn't work (largely due to my own inexperience likely). Hooking up to the tach signal worked great and I never looked back. This is apparently a pretty common problem with the LM1 (I was about ready to return mine) The problem is that the ECU tach signal is a fairly clean (5 volt, I think) square wave, while the coil signal is very high amplitude and ringy signal. Good luck and good tuning.

Ah, I have one of those but I never fitted it to the bike as I was using it with the dyno and the exhaust clamp. I used the inductive pickup off the coil and b=never had a problem. As RS guy says go to the forum as they can answer many questions but go with the tach pickup in this case. Tis for sale if anyone is interested.

But how do you use and inductive pickup on the coil-on-plug set up that the Triumph uses?

p.s I thought an inductive clamp could only be used on the high tention side of the coil.

nope, pickup from lT side of the coil (the wires on the coil on plug) but you get a better signal at the ECU if you can pick the wire out. Even the dyno we use uses this now although there are other methods used by other manufacturers. You do need the LM- though to make it woek but also on the LM- isthe facility to pick up from the tach lead, I beleive its pins 1 and ground (and its best to use the same ground as the tach which in this case is the ECU ground) Sorry I used the LMA-3 not the LC-1 but from the website you should be using the tach signal... 2) The RPM Kit ($429) is comprised of the basic kit plus the LMA-2 (RPM Converter.) This cable contains a circuit to convert a tach signal into an analog RPM signal that can be logged by the LM-1. This cable also has 4 additional terminal screws to tap into and log other 0-5 V analog sensors from your vehicle.

On my Daytona 675, I dont have a clean single tacho-signal from the ECU (the instrument cluster is fed by one single data stream cable). Therefor, I had to pick up RPM signal from a coil at the ECU connector , but it was too noisy for my WBO2 RPM input. I got help to design a band-pass filter that sorted the signal out and provided a clean RPM log. If nothing else works, I can give You a link to the thread on the WBO2 support forum or give a simple picture of the filter design.

sure, you have a CAN bus (bless the keihin ecu) also to the instruments, so no usable signal for WBO2 here. why just don't post the link. i'm interested in it, anyways.

Thanks, you guys (man, I love this forum!). I do have the RPM kit, and I'm gonna sniff out the tach wire when I get home. The next thing to suss out is whether or not I can configure the log charts with the same rpm and throttle % increments as the TuneBoy. That would make it simpler when I finally mess with the map.

@ Björn - OK, but I believe You should be registred to read all the mails: http://autos.groups.yahoo.....b/message/10719 . As the "schematic" in the thread is kind of dizzy, C1 and R1 are connected in serie from the coil to the WBO2 input and C2 and R2 are both parallell connected after R1, to ground. If You forget about the dots, here is the lay-out Coil --------C1-----R1---------------WBO2 ...................................I..........I ..................................C2.......R2 ...................................I..........I ....................................Ground C1 - 1uF, R1 - 10kOhm, C2 - 22nF, R2 - 20kOhm

Rick: The next thing to suss out is whether or not I can configure the log charts with the same rpm and throttle % increments as the TuneBoy | You can, very simply. Just display the chart view and double click on the row/column headings and you can type in new values.

Thanks SprintRSguy; I got that dialed in after having 6 hrs. on a plane yesterday to read the manual. Now if I could only invert the TPS scale it would match the TuneBoy chart amost perfectly. I wonder if Wayne has a plug-in that would work with the LM-1??? Got everything hooked up tonight, and will log a full session on tomorrow's ride. I tapped into the tacho and TPS wires at the ECU. I also used shielded cable; no noise spikes indicated yet (crossing fingers!). Thanks to all for the help!

The latest TuneEdit reads the AFR off the LM1 IIRC.

Its off the serial output IIRC. Not played with it myself yet.
