[edited]:

I recently discoverd a small hollow plastic box, which connects to the air intake. With no wires connected to it, I discounted this part as useless and left it out.

I have since discovered the part is a resonator.

The question is, how useful is this thing and what's its job...?

It's job is to reduce air intake noise. My advice is to put it back in since you gain nothing but noise by leaving it out. If the airbox is well designed then you might actually make air intake less efficient if you leave it out. If you decide to leave it out make sure you plug the hole in the airbox where this is attached.
