This extract from the Irish Times obituary of Martin Finnegan pretty well sums up the way I feel about road racing.

Motorcycle road racing is a sport difficult to understand or perhaps justify through dispassionate or logical analysis. Its demands are extreme, the toll it exacts too great. But who is to deny it to those for whom it is the only challenge that tests their skill and bravery?

Thousands are drawn to venues all over Ireland to watch these heroes compete – in both North and South, for it has ever been a shared creed that never needed any “ecumenical” initiatives.

I was watching the NW200 webstite live stream when it happened, they were following him with the helicopter & it looked like the front wheel had locked up on him, though the report suggests a engine seize.
Very sad.

His accident at the island was on a RC45. The rear wheel broke up at Ballaugh (i think).

Devasted to hear of his loss.

RIP Robert

Have already seen on another forum this being used as a reason to call for the stopping of road-racing.
Given the reported facts of this particular accident, this is more ridiculous than ever.
Robert knew the risks more than any of us, and like all road racers carried on because of his love for the sport.

My thoughts are with his family and friends.

News has only just reached me here, I've been on the beach all day and not had the wireless on in the car.

It's all been said already.

RIP Robert, another one of the Armada taken whilst partaking in the sport they loved.

I'll always remember seeing him wander around the paddock, without a care in the world, with his cowboy hat on and a tribe of kids in tow - and then jumping straight on the bike and rattling off effortless smooth laps...

I think it was great that Robert's son Michael won the 250 race yesterday, his first NorthWest win.

I'm sure the old man and uncle Joey were cheering him on all the way.
