Hi,

Is it just me or does it seem to be unnecessarily fiddly to get at the bolts that hold the seat down and as for putting it back on again, I'm sure i'm going to end up stripping the threads, so

does anyone have any tips to make it easier to get the seat on and off or are there any quick release products available for this?

Cheers

I replaced mine with a Corbin seat, not cheap but I find it more comfortable and it goes on and off with a key.

Not only are the screws awkward to get at, but the clips bend away from the screw when you apply any pressure.

Go to Halfords, get a couple of U-clips and a couple of screws to match.
Think mine were No10's.

You'll need to remove the rear cowl to fit the new U-clips but they're about a gazillion times stronger than the ones Triumph fit.
Just be careful not to scratch the paint, when you line up the new screws as they'll likely be a bit longer than the originals.

If it's any consolation, my seat has been held on with a single bolt pretty much since it was new as the U-clip has pretty much always been bent. I think they're made of soft cheese.
I've been meaning to fix this with new U-clips and bolts but I've yet to get a tuit for this little chore.

Hi Dave and welcome this will sort it out in minutes

Take current fixings and throw as far as you can see them like I did.

Go to Halfords or Autoshop and buy some 25mm or 30mmx10mm Self tapping dowel bolts the type that hold the wings on a modern car, also get the matching spring/U-clips to screw them into.
Cost less than a £1 when I did it.

Now replace the Triumph rubbish with this because the dowel screws are pointed they locate everytime 5sec instead of 10-30mins cross treading fiddling with the bolts.
Pop a 10mm socket and T-bar in the tool kit job done.

Only thing to watch out for, be careful when you slide the seat back you don't mark the paint.

Or if you want to stick with what you have got cut a biro casing in half and push the seat back with it, then drop the alan key down the centre.
This works well apparently but I've never tried it.

Hi,

Thanks for all the ideas, I think i'm missing something here though as my bolts seem to screw into a big aluminium casting, which was why I was worried about stripping the threads?

The Corbin seat (or other) is a possibility as the girlfriend was complaining about the pillion seat and we are going on a long trip in September, so I may need to do something for that.

Andrew, where did you buy the seat from, direct from the US or through a dealer here, and what sort of price was it if you don't mind me asking?

Barney, the biro trick sounds handy, I shall try that next time, probably when i'm replacing the battery strap where the rubber has perished!

They must have changed the design mine had spring clips with a 6mm threaded section on the bottom leaf of the clip.
This clipped over the tag attached to the subframe.

It was from a UK dealer, I can't remember which one but the price was the same as direct.

my 07 machine came with U clips. If they made the casting a bit thicker in those two areas you'd be able to have a threaded hole rather than the clips.

I've replaced mine with Dzus fasteners and thicker U clips. A quarter turn with a screw driver to release/secure.

I take my seat off 3 or 4 times a year It was a fiddle the first few times now I can do it in seconds do not push the bolt it opens up the clip. Anyway how often do you need under the seat its not that you keep your sandwiches and water proofs in ther,It is only a sports tourer after all you dont expect to get some space to carry anything do you.

McWill, agreed Was just a minor irritation from my point of view.

Have got a Kreiga tail pack so I wanted to be able to take it off/on without to much hassle. One of the clips had been excessively bent so decided to replace both.

Used to keep a 1.5m chain and padlock under my speed triples seat + plus tools and puck! Guess I could put a burger under the sprint seat to BBQ

What gets me about this problem the factory have know about it from day one, it was so bad they had someone at the first NEC show the bike appeared at, showing you the correct way to refit the seat because they got so much stick over it.
The fix would have cost pence as said a thicker casting that is tapped or a couple of nuts welded to the sub frame sorted.
But instead 3 years after the launch no change, if you only take the seat off 2 or 3 times a year its still a pain.
I take mine off quite often for cleaning and fitting and removing the tank cover.
