Been looking for a new lid, used Shoei for years but am very impressed with the Schuberth S1 Pro.

Pricey at just over £400 but very comfortable.

Anyone any experiences, good or bad?

Supposed to be the quietest one can buy. If you ignore the wierd looks and BMW image then I would buy one over the trendier marques any day.

Schubeth used to make Schumacher's lid.......shame they did such a good job.

The are supposed to be sehr gut and you can no doubt expect it to be very well made by ze Germans. Just be careful of the desire to invade small countries or embark on a course of ethnic cleansing.

Wasn't that impressed with the S1 Pro I looked at at work. Didn't fit me (obviously may fit you), but didn't feel like a £400 lid. The silly flip down sunshield cut straight across line of vision. And they have a serious problem with the anti fog coating delaminating on their visors.

ive got one

the lid is really comfy, the visors are brilliant, the flip down is fantastic.

not as quiet as my AGV though.

i would give it 8.5 out of 10 overall

Which AGV have you got, Flappytabs?

Only my TiTech sounds like there's a tsunami going off inside it at a ton plus. (Just ordered one of the new GP Tech jobs though. Very tasty. And probably even louder.)

I've tried other makes of so-called 'quiet' helmets, but quite frankly found it all to be a load of tosh. They all require earplugs to be worn if you're going to be doing more than local shopping.

The Schuberth may be the exception, but I'll wait until I'm drawing my pension before I go down that route... (Yeah, I know, I know - only 15 years to go. God-dammit...)

Ive got a Schuberth S1.
Like any lid its not going to fit everyone. I find Arai helmets give me a headache. The Schuberth though is a perfect fit on me.

The ventilation works slightly better that other lids Ive had, and when moving I can actually feel the cool air on the top of my head, but I do have very short hair. Longer hair may negate that.

The flip down visor is very good, but it did take a ride or two to get used to it.
By design it doesnt come all the way down, but stops so that when you are in a riding position, the bottom of the flip down visor is level with the top of my tacho so you can always see the clocks very clearly. If the bottom of the flip down cuts across the middle of your field of vision, I can only think that the visor is not all the way down or you have your head tilted backwards.

The main visor seals very well, to the point of being airtight at speed and watertight when it rains which is good.
The front ventilation works fairly well and gives a nice breeze on your face on a warm day of you have the main visor closed.

It is the quietest lid Ive ever had, but that said, once above 75 or so there is still enough wind noise that you still wear ear plugs.
The skirt around the underside no doubt contributes towards this, but it is also a very warm lid to wear in the winter without being any hotter in the summer.

And the bad points.
It is according to the booklet aerodynamicly designed for stability, and while riding the naked S3 that works well and the wind noise isnt that bad.
BUT wearing it on the Pan European where your head is in the turbulance created by the upright screen instead of the clean airflow it is on the S3, and the wind noise is horrendus. This does of course apply to all helmets, but ive tested it against a Suomy and an AGV and its definatly worse on the Schuberth.

When you get it, make very sure that you get the newer version which has a pinlock visor as standard.
The older ones have (as mentioned above) an anti fog coating which either doesnt work at all, or peels off in chunks after a short while. The Pinlock solves all the visor issues, so check which one you get.

I tend to change helmets every few years or so. WHen I was younger it was usually to have the latest Arai or some other shallow reason.
These days I just replace what I have with another S1 when I manage to drop it down the stairs or something.

The white celtic dragon one looks pretty snazzy

I've got the J1 Jet Helmet (there are pictures in my profile) ... it is way quieter than the AGV Stealth full face I had (which got pinched recently). I wear plugs all the time no matter which helmet I wear.

After 18 months I've had no problems with the anti-fog coating. The visor stays in position at almost any speed, and the ventilation is good.

The flip down visor is brilliant, and you can opt for either the straight edge or the shaped edge which goes over the nose ... I much prefer the shaped edge.

Visor change mechanism is the best I have come across ... open the visor, push a button and the visor pops out. The visor clarity is flawless.

I'd buy another without hesitation.

And..it seemed bl**dy heavy after my Shoei.

J&S were discounting Shoei Raid II's - I replaced my old Shoei XTR with a Raid II - it just felt better and nicer than my old Shoei , but really comfy straight away - it's much quieter and gets a RiDE Triangle , even better for £160.

BTW I tried a Schuberth and it didnt feel comfy at all, tight across the front of my bonce.

Whether a helmet is quiet or not depends a lot on how it fits (the side of) your head. I have an AGV GPblasomething helmet, and it is much more quiet than any other I have tried (including the Schuberth), probably due to the good fit to the side of my head. Come to think of it, the Schuberth I took for a testride had a manufacturing flaw in the innerlining, I wasn't impressed with it, seemed overpriced to me.

BTW, this is an interesting concept: http://www.traccon.com, a helmet with builtin rearview mirror, and it actually seems to work too (for some ).

Anyway, YMMV and all that.

The schuberth is quieter than other lids Ive owned. But as I say, at anything more than busy traffic speeds, its still loud enough that you still want to wear earplugs.

As for the rear view helmets, they have been around for the last few years and have been at the NEC show the last couple of years.
Ive actually tried one and while they seem like a good idea on paper, in practice they are bloody awful.

Sitting upright you can see behind, but when leaning forward like you would at speed, all you get is a nice view of the sky.

They are also very disorientating. To look behind you on your left side, you have to tip your head back and turn to the right. Try doing that in a corner and you will end up in a hedge. As you go round a left hand corner, you need to turn to the right to see behind you, taking your line of sight off the corner and out to the far side of the road preventing you from looking through the corner.
Engineered target fixation...

Just walking around in a figure of 8 around two cones while wearing it is disorientating. On a bike it would just be an accident waiting to happen.

A perfect example of a good principle badly fucked up in design

Heh I wondered about how it would work in practice, and how you'd be able to deal with the fact that the helmet rearview mirror is in fact attached to your head, and thereby constantly moving...

I guess I'll pass on the rearview mirror helmets then, cheers

It's not easy to take a good picture... I guess it starts with parking the bike in front of a better background

I wanted to take a few pictures in front of the garage, but that involved moving the bike back and forth a zillion times (steering lock is reduced somewhat due to the thick UPSD legs...), and there was no light there...

I love the '00-01 RS's black frame, it just begged for a matching UPSD unit

I am actually thinking of spraying the bike metallic black or anthracite.

Well, I was going to finish the bike with a nice big yellow top box, but they are quite rare... Apparently some guy in England had one...

Actually it's a nice color against the black frame, and I have a can of it sitting in the garage. But I am thinking of something with a wee bit more bling to it... But not too much...

I like the straight bars, it gives the illusion of control I think you can get a riser kit for the RS.

Well I got myself a Schuberth R1.

Done 2000 miles in it now so here's a report.
Very comfy and a bit lighter than my Shoei XR900.

Better peripheral vision which is useful when joining an oblique junction and you need to look almost behind you to check for traffic.

Can't say its any quieter than my Shoei but then it does'nt have all the neck padding that the S1 does. Still need ear plugs for a long ride.

Ventilation, best I've had on any helmet. As soon as the temps drop a bit it gets nippy and you need to close them. Its fun digging the flies out too!

Drop down sun visor, bloody great. You don't need to carry a spare tinted visor, and its good in hot weather as up to 60 mph you can raise the main visor but leave the tinted one down so you get a nice cooling breeze whilst still getting protection from flies and general flying road crap.
Best of all it pisses my mates off who mercilessly take the piss because I look really cool, and its fun to ride alongside ones mate and casually flip the space visor down. This simple act can render ones colleagues helpless with laughter and makes it easy to blow them into the weeds!

Overall, a good quality item and i would recommend it if you reckon you are cool enough!

According to MCN the helmet mfrs are annoyed because the impact test on the side is on a bit of helmet that doesn't actually touch the ground in an impact

the Arai RX7 only got 3 stars while a car based one got 5.
