Is this the cause of my Thunderbird's unreliabilty ?

Inline Image

A split in the insulator on a bullet connector occassionally shorting on a bolt in the nacelle resulting in an intermittant fault.

Could be - Any signs of arcing?
Intermitant shorts usualy spark a bit as they make and break.
If there's no sign of that happening then the problem is likely elsewhere.

I found this by the scientific method of jiggling ( technical term ) the wires about in the nacelle and saw the connector spark. It was on the horn circuit.

On the horn circuit and it sparked.

That would bring the system voltage down while it passed current.

Could cause all sorts of problems.

Nice cheep one to fix once you've found it.

I'm hoping it was the cause of all sorts of mysterious problems.
Batteries dying, ammeter showing high charge then no charge. Bike cutting out, not starting and then starting up as if nothing wrong. Trouble was I kept finding a connector had come apart and thought a-ha that's it, then a duff zenor and a duff battery. in hind sight these were probably symptons not the cause.
Need to get out for good run this weekend see how it goes.

Old Guzzi's are easy - all the major parts are made by Bosch!!

Just put a new starter motor on the Guzzi. I only bought the bl**dy thing because it had a sidecar on it. Needed it to pick my daughter up from school, its been a pain ever since.

Which model??

I had my rotor rewound some years ago, starter motor overhauled etc.................only electrical failure was the voltage regulator - replaced with "Durite" solid state one for about 1/10th the price!!

[edited]:

Mines a 79 spada so it will be basically the same as a Le man. First job on mine was getting the rotor rewound. I got a recon starter, the bloke next door is a car mechanic and he'll get me stuff at trade price.
I'll post some pictures soon.
