Needs his balls boiling in oil!........just had to grind one ignition coil mounting torx bolts off with my dremmel.

Give me a good old 10mm headed bolt or even an allen key head anyday........there...rant over

Halfords do a torx socket set.....Had to buy some after breaking a mates 6mm
I agree they are a pain and to think it was only invented to stop DIY repairs and servicing

I think they are better than a normal allen head if you use the correct socket. They fit tighter than an allen head and I believe (but I could be wrong) they an torque to higher torque settings than a normal bolt with less chance of slipping and stripping the head.

That does assume that yopu have the correct torx socket though.
Its the security heads that annoy me. They dont fit allen sockets or torx sockets althugh they look very similar to torx head bolts.
Lots of people mistake these for torx bolts and sheer the insides of the heads trying to use torx or allen sockets.

Heh! That's funny! I have a torx bit set just to deal with the rounded off allen head bolts! Bang one in there and most of the times you'll manage to get the allen bolt out!

Years ago they were a PIA and yeah I think they were invented to stop home mechanics.

These days socket sets are readily available and mot that dear.

So I don't mind that much.

Having had experience of both at work Tor-X are far better than Allen IMO. Tor-X was brought in not to stop home mechanicing but to give a better fit between the driver and the head of the bolt. There's more surface area on the inside of a a Tor-X bolt head (the bit where the key fits) than there is on an Allen-head bolt of the same thread size.

The main reason people have problems IMO is that they buy cheapass Tor-X bit sets from places like Chavfords and then wonder why they are about as useful as chewing gum in getting the bolts off. I've got a good set (no not Snap-on ......!!) and I've never had trouble getting a Tor-X bolt out, especially on the bike. What can fcuk you up is if the manufacturer puts Loctite on the bolts, in which case it's a touch of heat from the good old gas blowlamp to break the chemical bond before trying to remove the bolt.

What annoys me, is manufacturers who use both types.

FFS, torx or allen, but not bl**dy both, tho personally I prefer allen heads.

And certainly not those stoopid security bolts. That's 3 sets of tools you need

you'r right Rob... they should pick one Torx or Allen.

I prefer Torx though as I feel you can't round of a Torx head as easily you can an Allen head.

Talking about special tools... what about the two on Speedy... the tope york tool and the swingarm tool. I don't get it.

Whats the purpose? Security? Do thieves really have the time to remove a swingarm instead of taking the whole bike? Has to be another purpose which I'm not aware of.

I've got a decent set of torx head tools....'Beta' brand which we use at work, on par with Snap on if you ask me.

I actually think they easier to mess the head up on a torx bolt than a std Allen key head.


And whats that Torx head bolt doing holding the airbox on all about?...what a pig that was to get to!!...never mind getting the bolt back in.

What about "Robinson Drive?" - they are the small square drive bits in most kits, that no-one ever uses!!!

As, it was a Canadian that invented them, but was beaten to it by both Phillips and Posidrive!!!

Every wood screw fixing in Canada is by "Robinson" - how do I know??
My bloody crate that I transported the bike in was covered in the damned things!!!
So many in fact - that when C&E wanted to look inside the crate when it arrived in the UK they had to break into it!!!

As, no-one had the correct drive bit for their screwdriver!!

Consequently I "Lost" all my tie downs that were holding the bike in place, as they couldn't re-use the crate???

I thought that the system was OK - if the rest of the World used it!!

Hence my problem - OK when I was in NF though, I got used to them (Case of having to!)

The technique is to hold the bolt on to the end of the torx key with a piece of masking tape, once you've got it on and tightened up you pull the tool off.

I dunno what those square head bolts are called, but I do know GM used the hell out of em in the 80s. Not sure if you all have GM over there in Europe, but they make incredibly fugly cars over here in the US with names like Cadillac and Saturn. Check them out on the "Internet" sometime if you like gore, keep your puke bucket nearby.
