Hello all, Just registered myself, I have a TBS, had it 5 years and love it to death-I use it mainly for touring and has coming up to 34000 miles on her. Apart from adding dirt and corrosion she is standard. But I would like a bit more oomph without spendinga bazillion ££s! I'm not tight-my main weapon of choice for cutting up traffic is a heavily modified Buell S1 Lightning! (yeah I will expect some abuse for that) I cannot seem to find a search function on this site, cos I have questions that I would like answered!!! What cans are available for the TBS which sound good but look similar to standard? Is it hard to fix that bloody loose bolt in the alternator, impellor bolt? (I am not a complete biff with spanners) What are the recommended tuning tips? Well, thanks in advance!

Hi Beefster welcome to the madhouse.... It seem that the TBS is gaining popularity on this site. As regards cans there are few that are available... The Triumph cans are pretty good but are rare But you could try Emgo cans like mine (obscenely loud)Photo Album Image Or you could have a look at the Mecatwin offerings (obscenely expensive...) As for tuning there are a few mods that can give the TBS a bit more pep airbox/cans and jetting also a hotter cam but the man in the know is Sandy at Triumph-ant.com... or look at this link for more info...! http://www.t595.net/messa.....hter/61824.aspx Like the idea of the 1200 lump dropped in....! As for the search function, use the "knowledge base" If you are not already I would suggest lashing out a tenner to become a premier member as that gives you unlimited access to all areas of the site.... Once again welcome, if you are after a laugh call in at the Hinckley arms.... All mad as hatters in there....

http://www.t595.net/messa.....-TBS/61713.aspx There you go.... Those cans on Robs bike are now on mine, bit o bracketry and they fit okay for either bike... The sound file attached does not accurately reproduce how loud these cans are.... I have fitted them with Db killers and packed them with the fibreglass matting and they are still kin' loud

Beefster welcome to the mad house, you are to be commend on your choice of conveyance. I've had mine since may last year and love it to bits a lot more fun than the ST to ride, got the old girl stripped down at the moment doing a full 12,000 mile service plus. Then some bits from MecaTwin to lose the back end. Brakes and suspension next year then a set of K&N filters and flat side carbs super 3 pistons and S3 cams. Got to do it so the wife doesn't find out how much it costs. I got my aftermarket pipes off ebay. I want to finish up with something like this Photo Album Image As your in Poole how about a meet at Westbay one Sunday morning in the summer

Now that is nice Barney.. Had mine a few years, I don't want to spend a fortune as I like it the way it is-just a bit more oomph and perhaps a bit more noise-Am in the process of fitting Hyperpro springs all round as 2 up she does struggle (but then I am fairly large!!) Does anyone have any advice on fixing the rattly alternator-or shall I just dive in? Also seems to have developed a very small oil leak from the area where the sidestand switch is-but will have a good look tomorrow. Am also gonn afit a k&n panel filter as I need the carbs off to get to the alternator anyway! I shall get full membership and posta pic

Tis probably the clutch pushrod oil seal or the gearbox output shaft seal.... leak originates from behind the hydraulic clutch housing..... Had mine done last summer cost £130 inc labour

Can also be the shifter shaft seal, I think. Had to replace mine as it leaked on my exhaust. Beefster, welcome to the FRAY by a good ole Southern American, Triumph ridin enthusiast.

There is a very clean example on eBay right now. 53-plate in orange (not the best colour) with 6k miles about £3k.

I've done the 'stage 1' tune: Triumph race pipes K&N filter Dyno Kit stage 1 Drilled air box It seems to 'pick up' when I hit the higher rev range. The bike in general is great 'fun' at sensible speeds and looks brilliant. I was thinking of going for a stage 2 but to be honest things start getting hairy when you push it. I had a biggie before Christmas when I braked too hard (got a 675 lever) and the bike lost control. Just got it all fixed and painted and left a 1000 quid in the workshops. Stagte 1 is sensible. Stage 2 or 3 maybe more than is needed?

Would you say the dyno jet kit is worth it? are all your mods much better than standard all though the rev range or just at the top? Perhaps you should get the Hyperpro spring upgrade kit to help with the handling (I have and I really am impressed with it)

I was thinking of upgrading the suspension this winter but I spent the money on the repairs instead. I'll defo do it later this year. RE: the dyno kit. The TBS (and that engine in general) has a 'hole' in the rev range around 3500 revs and the kit gets rid of it. It's smooth all the way to around 8000 (I think) then the 'boot' kicks in. Maybe just the open pipes and the carb adjustment is enough on its own, but I'd always wanted the dyno kit!! The dip at 3500 was annoying. If you've got the cash do the stage 1 anyway. I really don't think the money for the Stage 2 with SP3 bits and CDi is worth it, since we're limited by the road conditions and the chassis. I dunno, maybe there's more lower down grunt, but then again maybe it's all top end?! I think suspension is the way to go. If I'm feeling extravagant next winter I may go for the AMORTISSEUR BITUBO rear shock which is lowered. Ref : 03TTBS154 Amortisseur BITUBO + court pour T.Bird Sport sold by Mecatwin. This is supposed to make the bike feel lighter. I've lowered the yoke down the forks by 3 mm and that does make a difference. A cheap but effective mod! Money wise the TBS is a bottomless pit!! So what're you gonna do? I'll be in touring mode soon. I've put on the tank bag and the King and Queen seat (from ebay) and will be taking the wife for a spin!!

Well, I don't want to throw too much money at the TBS as my Buell is my money pit!! I have the Hyperpro springs, I really do rate these! Have just fitted the K&N air filter and cut the box about so that there is just enough left to mount the bits back on the sides-but heres the thing, it's now running terrible-I assume it is running too lean as when I open the throttle it makes a labouring noise and no extra acceleration!! If I apply choke it picks up a bit but not that much! I have got a set of Triumph straight through pipes (but the baffle needs fixing as its rattling about inside) so as soon as that is done I will get it set up together on a rolling road. I also got myself a king and queen seat off ebay but although the chick says its comfy I find the rider part makes me sit too far back and makes me uncomfortable

With the sports cans and filter kit they need jetting up, with the airbox cut about it will be running massively lean, I'd advise not running it till you have gone up a couple of sizes on the mains at least..... You could end up cooking valves or holing a piston Dunno what sizes, as I'm a mechanical numpty but I know triumph will charge about a ton to do the jetting up if you take it in...

sometimes jetting up can be overkill - ie to swap for a larger orifice main jet .... Try moving the needles up into the slides - just use the clips in a lower slot to richen it up overall, but within the jets fully open capability - this is often trial and error with plug chops as well to see hows shes doing ..... but having said all that, maybe the airbox pulling thru to more open pipes etc would really weaken her ..... dont like the sound of the symptoms tho !

Sorry mate can't help didn't touch the jetting when I put the Triumph aftermarket cans on mine all I've done is kept an I on the plugs to make sure they are the right colour. So far all is fine. I think they are set to run quite rich from the start or so a bike mechanic mate tells me.

Thanks guys, Totally right, in that I am not gonna ride her til sorted, thought about moving the needles but its still alot of guess work-there is a rolling road in Southampton who have an exhaust gas analyser so I will take it to them and take the guess work out. The company-for any Southern Posse is Mayors Motorcycle Care Unit 22, Test Valley Business Centre Test Lane Nursling Southampton SO16 9JW They mainly do Harleys but they also do Triumphs as the main guy is a huge Triumph nut. They did my Buell and was really impressed with them. Wasn't til I started lookin at cutting the box about that I noticed how small the hole was that lets the air into the filter-its smaller than a single carb!!! I will probably adjust the needles just so I can ride it down to them though!! Oh and I have been reliably informed that with todays unleaded, its very hard to tell how an engine is running by plug colour!!

£2500-£4500 depending on age & condition I paid £2900 for my 2000model... some have one pipe up each side, while others have the stacked system on the RHS, the ones with the stacked system are not as good for pillions as they have a different subframe that mounts the pillion pegs higher.... Not overly fast, but hugely torquey and good on fruel, a bit top heavy but they handle okay, and have oodles of character..... I love mine......

Paid £2900 for mine 1998 but only had 3000 miles on it,but near mint and about £750 on bits to change it to what it is now. As Blue says lovely bike and so much fun to ride after bland more modern bikes.
