Is it really necessary to check the valve clearences at 12000 miles? Has any body found them to be out and had to adjust them? Seems a bit OTT to me and aimed at keeping the dealer in business!

The reason I ask is my bike has an oil leak from the cam cover and has just come out of warranty. I did mention it to the dealer whilst it was under warranty (under 1000 miles 6 months old) but they said it was the wax oil put on the engine to protect it coming off, It wasn't! Triumph won't do it uner warranty as the bike is 2 years old and should have the valve clearences checked on the service (12000 miles), the bike has only done 4500 miles! The dealer is doing it FOC as a good will gesture. Needless to say I don't think much of Triumph build quality or their warranty dept.

If the dealer is doing it FOC, then there's little reason to complain really. I bet it's a trapped gasket, or just a loose bolt. It's not Triumph's fault you haven't ridden the bike, but you should have complained more about the oil leak, TBH, if you wanted it sorted.

Valves need checking, especially if it's been ridden hard, or not at all!! They could easily close up and then you'd possibly be looking at a large bill for bent valves! I don't think they'd need doing with the small mileage you've done, plus the dealer will take that into consideration and may or may not check them.

As for the warranty dept? Well, a lot have had issues, but trying to claim after it's run out?????...............................................

I'm happy with the dealer as they are doing the work FOC, although I did report the problem to them initially and they should have checked properly. The bike is only just out of warranty, end of April. Triumph arn't interested at all.

The thing I really wanted to know is are the valves likely to be out after 12000 miles or is it ok to leave the check to the 18000 mile service?

I will only be looking to do the 6000 mile service when the bike has done 6000 miles and not the 12000 mile 2 year service.

The time and cost is in adjusting the clearences not checking them

so i'd get them checked

Checking is cheap, and they are not really likely to be out with such a low mileage.

Out of warranty, so why should they honour it?
Even with my loathing of Swepson and Co I can't see reason here.

My 12,000ml service cost £60 more than my 6,000ml service. And the big service has the air filter and spark plugs and pro cool changed plus the valve clearences checked so makes no sence you only doing a 6,000 your service history will be punk. and as said some clearances could be tightening up

If you have registered a complaint with the dealer and have a record of having done so whilst the warranty was still valid surely they should honour the claim.

If it was a passing conversation with the dealer many months ago you may struggle.
