and I'm thinking of putting a modern front end on it - any tips? I have found that the forks are 33mm - same as Honda Rebel, but with a long travel on them. I do really want a wire whell front - and I'd like to retain the original yokes. Any ideas, chaps?

Because I'd like a disc front end. I'm going caff racer with it anyway. I used to have the same reaction when someone told me they were going to put a modern front end on a Triumph - but I'm softening with age... Also, and more crucially, it's going to be cheaper than trying to restore the current forks - rusted to fcuk.

its the other way I'd be tempted to go with it - but for two things. Lack of green lanes this way, and the fact I'm sharing it with me dad - who's not the tallest of chaps, and so it needs to be lower down.

I'd be tempted to stick with the original forks - stanchons bushes and seals won't break the bank after that it's just paint. Would definately look to putting the '69 type twin leader on though. The 8 inch version on my '72 Daytona is as much brake as the rest of the rig can use. There is also a 7 inch should go in your existing drum I think.

John, cheers for that - I'll look into it. having never been a rider of Meridens - merely a willing assistant in the restoration of them - I feared my modern style would fall foul of the front end. Ventured out to hae a bit of reccie on the parts tonight - have discovered that I have 2 frames, at least 2 engines in parts, 3 heads, pistons at std, +20 and +40. Barrels of dubious boring, but I suspect standard. At least 2 oil pumps. And this was only a cursory dig in boxes! Probably mostly all I need to get things going. Also, 2 sets of wheels - but both with the standard 7" SLS front brake. I suspect that I will take what's needed to get 2 engines running - after all, I have 2 frames - and flog the rest off, or keep some as spares. I know some 350 bits are getting harder to come by. Crucially, I only have one set of rather cruddy forks. Out of interest, are you John Nelson, of previous TOMCC fame? I (and my family) used to be involved in the club, many moons ago. Apologies for asking, just wondered.

Tonty, There are a few John Nelsons about in the Triumph world. I am John S. Nelson presently Chairman of the Meriden Branch of TOMCC and VC of the Club. I have no connection to John R Nelson, the original Mr Triumph, Patron of the TOMCC, one time service and warrantee manager at Meriden, Chairman of the Co-op, founder of JR Technical Publications and author of various excelent books such as "Bonnie the development history of the Bonneville" and the T160 workshop Manual. He is older than me and has more hair. There used to be a John Nelson in Derby branch I think - that wasn't me either.

That's great - I just wondered if you were the old machine registrar for TOMCC. I used to be involved with Ilford Branch, but much much more so my parents. Mid 70's to about 5 years ago. Still this ain't TOMCC, is it? This is T595! I shan't mention it again. All the best with Meriden Branch.
