Have a T100 bonneville 2005 and have noticed on a number of occassions that the screw type petrol cap is a right pig to unscrew ? . Sometimes with both hands really trying to grip the cap just can't un-screw it? Any one else had/have this problem ...if so is there an easy solution?. thanks in adavance Steve

Steve This is a very, very common problem with Bonnies. The cap just jams on, especially if you do it up too tight - and that is really easy to do. It's a bit of poor design and I think Triumph really ought to be ashamed of themselves for not sorting it out. Most people recommend that you lube the thread with some rubber grease and then only tighten the cap to the first click and no more. Part of the problem is that the cap is hard to grip and you run a real risk of messing the paintwork around the filler neck while you struggle with the thing. I had terrible bother with mine. I went back to the dealers the first time it happened with only 115 miles on the odometer and the bike virtually running on vapour. It took two mechanics to get the cap off. When it jammed again on a garage forecourt a few days later I decided to junk it in favour of a Monza cap. This is a lovely piece of kit, though a little pricey, and is available from Jenks Bolts, Jack Lilley, Mototwin, Norman Hyde etc. It removes that "will I be able to get the sodding cap off" tension from riding the bike as well as looking the mutt's nuts.

Thanks for the reply "Suppards", Agree with your comments about poor design. I have since posting searched other sites and answers vary from using palm of hand to push down and twist off, "thump" it first, lubricate seal, and it will loosen with mileage. Well I tried palm of hand........didn't work for me. Tried thumping it.........didn't work for me. Didn't like the sound of greasing seal as I reckon this will attract dust. So as sad as it sounds I have taken the "usage" theory and sat there with mug of tea in one hand and repeatedly undone and done up cap. Have done this about 50 times and at about 100 miles per tank load I reckon the cap has now got the usage of a bike that has got 9000miles on clock with what was already on there. Fingers crossed it seems ok so far. However the very next time it locks up I will fork out for Monza cap as you suggested and many others on other sites have. Thanks again....Steve.

You're very welcome Steve. How long have you had the Bonnie? Have you removed the ugly and useless Secondary Air Injection System yet?!

Have only had Bonnie since this new years eve. Prior to that hadn't ridden since 1974. As for the SAIS, what are the benefits of its removal? All I know is it is something to do with exhaust emissions?....I'm not very technically minded when it comes to engines.

Removing the air injection gubbins will stop the exhaust downtubes from going blue and - if you decide to fit aftermarket proper exhausts (so that the Bonnie sounds like a Bonnie and not like a sewing machine) it'll avoid too many backfires when you close the throttle.

I recommend you do it Steve - it makes the bike so much nicer to ride. You can buy a kit with the necessary plugs etc from Jenks Bolts or Norman Hyde for a few quid.

I had after market pipes when I first got the bike and yes it sounded a hell of a lot better than now with the original pipes back on. The reason I swaped them back was because insurance co. told me that "NOT FOR ROAD USE" meant not legal so therefore bike is not road legal and would not pay out if involved in accident?. Now I know a lot of people use these types of pipes every day and get away with it, but I didn't fancy taking the gamble of getting sued £xxx's if involved in accident. I know life is full of what if's. Although having said all that I am slowly knocking the baffles through in the current pipes that are clearly marked as OK!.

Got TOR zorsts on mine and b*gger worrying about the insurance company. You've modified your previously legal pipes so that they are now illegal. That puts you in just the same position doesn't it? Sewing machine or pleasing vertical twin grunt. I know which I go for!!

Yes take your point, just that theyr'e not as in your face with the legal notice. However back to the main reason for this post the petrol cap, have tried the cap every day this week and fingers crossed it seems to be ok now?. Will get monza cap at first sign of any more problems though.

I don't Beliiiiiiiiiiiiieve it!!!............ Monza cap on order first thing tomorrow. Was about to go to fill tank up but thought just in case I'll pull over and make sure cap will come off still before I get to petrol station forecourt. Although in all fairness I hadn't had 3 shredded wheat this morning. The mind boggles!!!.

Well at least you checked before you got to the forecourt. I pulled in on a busy summer Saturday afternoon and entertained a queue of car drivers behind me with my efforts to remove a petrol cap. I could imagine speech bubbles over their cars saying "Look at that w*nker!". Oh the embarrassment... You'll love the Monza cap. It really does look so nice. Order from Jenks as you'll have the option of alloy or chrome. I got chrome cos I'm lazy.

I quite fancy one for the Adventurer, the original cap opens and shuts OK but the chrome is a bit tatty on it. I'm assuming if it fits a Thunderbird or Legend it will fit the Adventurer. Anyone got any ideas?

I shall have to have a close look at a TBS next time I'm near one and see how the caps compare. They do look rather tasty .....

Jules If you want a lockable fuel cap I have a Triumph lockable cap in brand new condition. It lasted one tankful on the T100 before getting switched for a Monza! Email me and we can sort something out.

No apologies needed, every night this week I've gone home with the intention of emailing you, and every night I've made tea, slumped in front of the TV and then mainlined recorded Dexters. Wiping all bike thoughts from what passes for my brain. I shall do so this lunchtime.
