I've alway had screw and lock nut bikes, so forgive me if I'm asking a dumb question, but wouldn't it be easier to remove the cam chain tensioner and unbolt the cams to get at the valve shims?

Some people on this forum have said and done exactly that instead of using the special tool.

On the newer models, you have to pull the cams since the shims are under the buckets.

I haven't had to do mine yet but it is about time to check them again.

My preferred way of swapping shims is have a mate push down the bucket with a big flat blade screwdriver on the edge of the bucket, allowing me to wiggle out the shim. Replacements can be popped in easily. A bit fiddly but quick and easy. YMMV

each to their own, but I do like the instant feed back when using the tool of knowing the installed shim has made the tolerance I expected. One roll of the cam and another quick measure. So many ways to skin a cat

hello, i am new to triumph and bikes in general. i have just purchaded a 98 t595 with 48000 km on the clock. with no service history i was a bit worried about the noisy cold starts, could this mean that its time to adjust the timing chain and the valve clearances ??? thanks

They do sound like a bit of a tractor up to about about 3000 rpm and when cold, but 48000km is a valve clearance interval I believe.

So it's probably a combination of both.

"$500-600"

Druck me Funk!

That must be the whole 48,000km service surely. In which case it may worth it as you probably get an oil change and fork refresh etc for that too.
